    Positive Outlook

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard as an intern (Less than a year)

    Pros

Incredibly friendly work environment that really cares about its employees. Innovation is encouraged through multiple employee focused programs. I would highly recommend interning for this company

    Cons

I have experience very few things I would categorize as "cons". There are times when being part of a large corporation can be a hassle, but overall it is still an incredible experience

I worked at Hewlett-Packard (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great experience gained as an contractor. Also great hours to work during the week. Did not want to be let go.

    Cons

Manufacturing plant may be clean but the attitude of the manufacturing floor employees is negative and unwilling to change

    Advice to Management

Improve morale of the hourly floor employees and do not discriminate between the contract and direct employees when an social event happens.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    Good work and life balance.
Opportunity to invent lots of things.
    Good HP way cultural.

    Cons

Not that much chance to get any promotion: The first year I worked at HP, I attend a retirement party for one process engineer who was in the same level for 30 years.

    Advice to Management

HP has lots of innovative invention and ideas, it takes upper level management's wisdom to decide what should be the next product. HP needs a person like Steve Jobs to lead.

    Pros

There is day-to-day flexibility and most managers are open to feedback. HP has attempted (and in some cases succeeded) to put tools in place promoting communication; a good example of this is deployment of office communicator.

    Cons

Recognition from management for "job well done" is scare or non-existent. E-awards have gone away, the HP Passport card is a joke, and small parties for completed projects have virtually disappeared; YET I still have some visibility to marketing and sales functions which spare no cost to showing a good time.

Another key point is salaries... I've been working 5 years, gotten 2 promotions and no pay increases. More expectations and no financial incentive?? Especially when all you ask for is to keep up with local inflation, which in southern California is a big deal (expensive).

In short... I'm dusting off the resume.

    Advice to Management

Please offer some attention to us measly engineers, technicians, and other individual contributors at the bottom of the food chain. This is a sad realization from the "glory day" stories of engineers being held at a high level, with considerable recognition.

We need some boost in morale, and this could help.

    Pros

Lots of open job postings at all times = many opportunities to move around within the company and build longevity.
Except for IT jobs, many positions allow employees to work from home

    Cons

Reductions in internal IT spending has brought process improvements to a halt. Application migrations are not measured by the number of improvements, but rather by whether the work can 'essentially' still be done with minor inconvenience. Many of the top performers have left in recent years, often leaving large workloads for those left behind.

    Advice to Management

Hold on to your talent! Recognition methods seem to be failing, as salaries are stagnant, stock options are increasingly rare, and cash bonuses are not effectively awarded.
