I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Work life balance is good. You can work few days from home if you want.
Engineers are smart and very easy to work with.

    Cons

Bad benefits. You have to pay very high deductible.
No raises. They hardly give any bonus.
Limited growth opportunities. Company is shrinking. So finding interesting project to work is hard.
If you have been working for a long time, you would not get raises but a new hire will get higher salary than you.

    Advice to Management

Management should not differentiate between old employees and new employees. And engineers are not the only reason a product fails. Management is more responsible for it.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Location, culture, financially stable, location

    Cons

Job Out-sourcing, lack of innovation, rewards mediocracy

    Advice to Management

After spending 25 years with the company, it was heart-breaking to watch management deliberately strip areas of innovation and excellence and work hard to ship jobs overseas to chase the short-term investor approval.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Talented co-workers, international customers, interesting technology

    Cons

I was a first line engineering manager with 12 reports. Company is driven by short term share price. There is little regard for individual employee talents and only lip service to customers. I was explicitly told by my section leader that the order of importance was:

    1) Shareholder value
    2) Customer growth and retention
    3) Employees

My team was handed layoff notices and had two months to train our replacements in India or risk losing severance. No joke.

Every few months I would receive a bulk email from the CEO encouraging my involvement in a PAC which supported the interested of the corporation.

    Advice to Management

Saving my breath, they won't listen.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A good first job, or early career choice

    Cons

1 - They firmly believe workers are disposable so do not trust them to supply a long term career. When I was laid off, a large percentage of the people were over 50 - when it is hard to get hired elsewhere. They laid off just enough younger workers to avoid litigation.
2 - executives have not been promoted from within and instead are hired -- so culture is not maintained

    Advice to Management

Laying off a worker and hiring a younger one at 75% salary may look like a cost savings, but expertise helps people work faster and smarter - so it may cost in the long run

I have been working at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Allot of Challenges. Very complex IT environment.

    Cons

Too many ineffective process. Difficult to get the job done. Recognition for the work above and beyond non-existent. Not everyone reads their email daily.

    Advice to Management

Change the culture and start doing more of recognition for going that extra mile. Increase IC salaries to be in line with the industry in their Geography. Eliminate processes and procedures that do not add value to HP.

    I worked at Hewlett-Packard full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is a large pool of resources inside of HP, and there are some interesting future products in HP Labs, as well as many very friendly employees.

    Cons

HP (at least the office where I worked) was a terrible place to develop software, from company proxy to odd top-down mandates ("we need to standardize on one language") I can't recommend it.

    Advice to Management

Hopefully the situation will improve as the company has split in two, allowing better focus for each company.
