I have been working at Highways England full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Flexibility depending on your line manager

    Cons

Stressful and very demanding environment, low salaries, bureaucratic business can't make any change or challenge the status quo to improve it or make it more efficient. People don't feel valued working in this place.

    Advice to Management

Some managers believe themselves to be infallible and owners of the absolute truth

I have been working at Highways England full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

The company looks after you. You get a lot of perks and the salary is good for the amount of responsibility that you have.

    Cons

This is not a career grade role, so people with 10 years experience are paid the same as someone with less than 1 years experience. If you want more money you have to be promoted, which is extremely rare.

    Advice to Management

Please stop changing the goal posts so often!

I have been working at Highways England full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Ample opportunity to shine but that's employee specific not an employer related point. With a good manager (of which there are plenty), there are plenty of opportunities to better yourself and plan a long term career goal. Plenty of recognition, learning pathways and encouragement to better yourself, Highways England want you to be the best individual you can.

    Cons

Some long standing staff have no forward vision. Shift work. Weekend work.

    Advice to Management

Nurture the ones that are willing and capable. Listen to ideas and criticisms - there is often good value to be gleaned from it.

I have been working at Highways England full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

Good benefits and flexibility, opportunities to develop, line manager support, opportunities to get involved in a variety of projects

    Cons

Senior management don't always listen, departments not consulted on policies that effect them before changes implemented

    Advice to Management

Listen to the people who do the jobs on a daily basis take action on what they say rather then what you think. Look at the salaries and policy around promotions so its fair for all staff.

I have been working at Highways England full-time for more than a year

    Pros

Pension (5% contribution from you = 10% contribution from HE) / Flexible- Working / Holidays (26-30 days a year) / £15 a day towards holiday schemes for children

    Cons

Truly terrible management - extremely incompetent & corrupt (always giving jobs to friends & family) / contractors running the show & wasting taxpayers money / many IT illiterate individuals / many overpaid staff members who add no value but hang on as they would never achieve the same pay/benefits/title elsewhere / loads of teams doing the same thing as each other

    Advice to Management

Do not allow individuals to hire their friends (more rigorous hiring process required) / ensure people are paid fairly (some are grossly overpaid & some are grossly underpaid) / do 360 degree reviews so that management can see where they are going wrong
