I worked at Highland Capital full-time

    Pros

About the only good things are the healthcare and company provided lunches (at least if you don't mind devaluing your worth to <$15 an hour).

    Cons

Despotic leader, bad management, constant lawsuits from disgruntled employees and angry clients, time card mentality (through an electronic tracking system - welcome to the new age), lack of prospects and sub-par pay versus the industry.

    Advice to Management

Close down the business and stop trying to manage external client money - do everyone a favor and try to enrich yourself solely with your own money.

I have been working at Highland Capital full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Free lunch, very high bonuses comparatively, smart people, great office, promotes often, exposure to a lot of different sectors/investment types/people, ability to transfer to different departments

    Cons

Firm growth stalled a little for the last few years. Past PR issues hurt the firm's reputation but that has been healing.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps focus on a specific investment vehicle type centered around what the firm is best at, CLOs & maybe secondary CLOs. There is a lot of growth potential and ability to continue to strive when focusing on an area of expertise.

I worked at Highland Capital full-time

    Pros

You'll learn a lot, and have incredible exposure to upper management. There's no limit to the opportunities you'll be given, provided you have the competence and drive to make good on them.

    Cons

None that I can think of - but if you're not 100% dedicated to what you do, you won't survive.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to express emotions from time to time. No one will think less of you if you take the time to congratulate people for doing a good job, or make them feel valued. It sounds cliche, but giving those out from time to time can go a long way.

Fast paced, intelligent group of individuals looking to succeed in the investment industry. Great opportunity to move up in a company that is poised for growth, and gain knowledge straight from the portfolio management team

    Cons

There are longer hours, but you definitely see the success in the amount of effort you put in.
