I worked at Highland Capital full-time

    Pros

You'll learn a lot, and have incredible exposure to upper management. There's no limit to the opportunities you'll be given, provided you have the competence and drive to make good on them.

    Cons

None that I can think of - but if you're not 100% dedicated to what you do, you won't survive.

    Advice to Management

Don't be afraid to express emotions from time to time. No one will think less of you if you take the time to congratulate people for doing a good job, or make them feel valued. It sounds cliche, but giving those out from time to time can go a long way.

    Pros

Fast paced, intelligent group of individuals looking to succeed in the investment industry. Great opportunity to move up in a company that is poised for growth, and gain knowledge straight from the portfolio management team

    Cons

There are longer hours, but you definitely see the success in the amount of effort you put in.

I have been working at Highland Capital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I have worked in the financial services industry for over seven years in New York, New Jersey, and Texas. I am the most impressed with the employees at Highland Capital Management, L.P. ("Highland"). The people that work at Highland are motivated, intelligent, helpful, and know what they are doing. The teams are kept pretty lean so everyone has an important role in helping the firm meet its goals. There is also room to transition into other areas. The benefits and perks are outstanding - free healthcare, generous 401(k), free gym membership, free parking, free lunch every day, fully stocked kitchen, etc. Highland also holds firm events and quarterly team events so you get to know people outside of your immediate team.

    Cons

The floor plan is open concept so it can get pretty loud, which makes concentrating and phone calls difficult at times.

I have been working at Highland Capital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

One of the greatest things about Highland is that you get exposure to upper management no matter what your level is in the company. The work environment is challenging but rewarding and pushes you to learn and grow in your position. This allows for many opportunities for advancement in your career. The benefits offered at Highland are top-notch! The office is very open and inviting which makes me happy to come here every morning.

    Cons

Highland has very high expectations for all of its employees and their work. This isn't exactly a con but it something to be prepared for when looking to work at the firm.

I worked at Highland Capital full-time

    Pros

free health insurance, lunch, parking, gym membership & cell phone plan

    Cons

Incestuous place where everyone is having office affairs & no one cares, including HR! Step on others to get ahead. No ethics shown by leadership.

    Advice to Management

Don't treat your employees like servants. Reward them with a carrot instead of beating them with a stick.

I have been working at Highland Capital full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    - Highland hires only the best candidates and it shows. The people are brilliant, talented and hard-working. You can learn a ton from your fellow employees.
    - The skills and knowledge you gain by working at Highland allow you to advance your career as far as you want it to go.
    - The pay and benefits (paid healthcare, free lunches, fully stocked snack room, paid cell phone, gym membership, etc.) are second to none.
    - Overall, Highland is one of the best places to work in the industry.

    Cons

The required 50-hour weekly average. This isn't much different than other companies in the industry, but just know going in that this isn't a 40 hour per week job.

I worked at Highland Capital full-time

    Pros

    Great benefits. Free lunch. Healthcare.
Great exposure to everything - you will get more responsibility than you are ready for and need to figure it out. Sink or swim type of deal.

    Cons

Not much to say that people haven't already mentioned. Lots of forced hours even when it is slow. Awkward culture and personal relationships. Politics wins the day.
