I have been working at Highlands Community Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Coworkers are great, competent, and consumer first attitude. Offer 4 day work weeks, time off is great

    Cons

Workload is absolutely crazy. Have went away from the consumer first approach, increasing work responsibility without just cause, benefits are now mediocre at best. Tobacco surcharge for employees, which has now increased. (Come on, it's social work, which is a very high stress job) Management needs to review responsibilities and understand that the staff turnover is not due to just burnout, but benefits and overall care for the direct service staff. Agency used to be the premier community service board agency is SW Virginia and now just another Frontier Health.

    Advice to Management

Review staff responsibility, review performance of management, take away surcharges for choices, get back to the way this agency used to run.

I have been working at Highlands Community Services full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Retirement.. trainings, vacation pay and PTO

    Cons

Hours are crazy.. upper managements does little to help and dumps all their responsibilities on you.. no acknowledgement of achievements. All about the money not the families. If they can find a billable loophole they are going to drain every other agency to get it.

    Advice to Management

Appreciate your staff.. do your own work.. send the lazy Program Director's home and pay us more.. we do all the work anymore. Give the leftover gravy back to the community.

I have been working at Highlands Community Services full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Supportive leadership, bosses that work as hard as their employees, great pay & great environment. There always seems to be opportunity that the director provides to win prizes, PTO, and he's always looking for ways to boost morale.

    Cons

No cons in my opinion. The job is tough work but nothing that you can't handle with a good work/life balance. Highlands always encourages taking time off if you need it, with a great PTO rate to support that.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the great work. My management has always been there for me to learn or give me leadership in tough situations. I never have an issue getting in touch with my bosses or getting them to take a minute to sit down with me if I need to staff with them. Wonderful open door policy.

I worked at Highlands Community Services full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

It's a great place to work when you first come on board with the agency.
Benefits were ok, especially the retirement.
"Most" of the staff are great to work with - this doesn't include management.
The offices will close during inclement weather.
    Pay was ok.

    Cons

After the "new" wears off, you best start polishing your resume.
The management staff needs leadership training, as it is obvious none of them have had no prior training.
It's all about the money - nothing else!

    Advice to Management

"Great leaders know the most effective way to communicate is by listening. Prideful leaders are only concerned with communicating their own thoughts and opinions."

    Pros

Easy to talk to supervisors when there is an issue; IT Department is on top of computer issues that come up; pay is decent; benefits are unbeatable.

    Cons

Starting everyone in each department out at the same rate of pay regardless of experience or education.

    Advice to Management

No issues with management at this time.

    Pros

Most co-workers are great to work with.

    Cons

Have to use PTO for holidays. More about money than helping people. Micro management. Lucky if you get paid for PTO when you leave. No exit interview.Add to job description without increase in pay. Lack of constancy.
