I have been working at Higley Unified School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Excellent co-workers
    No favoritism
    Trying to implement STEM

    Cons

    Overtesting
    Lots of repetitive meetings
    Not lots of effective PD

    Advice to Management

More organization to be less reactive than proactive
Have resources ready for teachers- if we need technology to implement strategies, let us have it in all classrooms, not some
Not all schools are given equal resources
Online textbooks make it difficult to teach and plan.

I have been working at Higley Unified School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It is a great community of families who care, and adults who care about kids and their futures. The district allows/requires all of their employees to participate in the Arizona State Retirement System. The 2016-2017 school year is allowing for more training and prep / paperwork time in the regular work week for Special Ed Paraprofessionals.

    Cons

The district is short staffed in many of the support positions because the hours and pay are low. (crossing guards, lunch aides, substitutes) This puts a strain on other staff members to take on additional duties, etc. Also many teachers are allowed to use only 3 sub days per school year, and then split their class into other teachers classrooms for the day. This leads to strain on faculty and staff and less instruction for students.

I worked at Higley Unified School District full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A great school district to work where administration is keeping up with the ever changing demands of CCSS. All teachers were working together to support their learners and very supportive of the administration.

    Cons

Stress and demands, but teachers are in it because they love and enjoy the kids. It makes it all worth it all.

    Advice to Management

    Always support your teachers.

I worked at Higley Unified School District (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    Great hours
    Good money and raises
    Flexibility
Many good people that work there

    Cons

Human Resource doesn't care about the para professionals
Directors come first and don't bother with the para's
They emphasize your at will employee
    Easily replaced
When new directors get hired - they tend to bring their people with them
Be careful who you talk to - lots of back stabbing

    Advice to Management

Listen to your para professionals! They are the ones who do all the grunt work. Remember where you started at...

I have been working at Higley Unified School District full-time

    Pros

    Students are driven to excel; outstanding assistant principals; ranked 45th in state out of 1,102 high schools; teachers are caring individuals;

    Cons

    Severe lack of technology and technology training; overcrowded student:teacher ratio due to lack of state/community support/funding for hiring/resource purposes; teachers are stretched beyond limits and under duress due to large class sizes; special education students are placed in classes (both resource and general education) without support staff and many are failing due to lack of support; severe lack of resources; severe lack of support from district; severe lack of support from district special education; special education caseloads are way above state recommended cap of 20 SLD students per special education teacher; leadership in special education department is non-existent due to the person who is now in charge is both inexperienced in special ed leadership and does not enjoy helping others - new special ed teachers are on their own;

    Advice to Management

Divert funding towards hiring more support staff, pay support staff better than average, and place support staff in both general education classes and special education classes; create resource math classes rather than keeping ALL special ed students in a general education math class where they can not get support and are failing (individualized instruction means just that: certain sped students will not understand the math at the pace being taught in the general education math environment, so create resource math classes for those students who need a slower pace to learn); listen to teacher complaints and understand they are not complaining just to complain; rather, they are competent teachers who need supports in order to help students learn; students with reading and writing disabilities MUST have computer access at all times to read (with assistive technology as needed) and to type rather than hand-write (also with assistive technology as needed).

I have been working at Higley Unified School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Wonderful hours if there is a substantial main income and you have school age children. A lot of off time through out the year, due to summer, fall, winter and spring breaks. The community is wonderful and close knit.

    Cons

You only work approximately 190 days a year and there are a lot of black out days and substitutes are scarce.

    Advice to Management

Value Support Staff as much as Teachers. Without Support Staff, the schools would be challenged.

I have been working at Higley Unified School District full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    -middle class suburbia
    -students generally respectful of authority
    -parents responsive to contacts
    -supportive and friendly coworkers
    -positive climate
    -newer buildings and technology
-definitely worked in both better schools and far, far worse schools
-decent salary- not far behind some of the highest paid districts in the state
--salary increases by credit hour, one by one, not 8 or 15 hour "steps", so more immediate payoff for pd
-no cost for benefits/ insurance for employees (just family, dental, and optical)

    Cons

    -class sizes of 35-40
-budget cut after budget cut (state cut, failed initiatives on ballot, new funding formula for charters)
-definite favoritism in every aspect (jobs, assignments, classrooms, supplies), often at the expense of less vocal and less favored teachers
-paper is obsessed over and rationed, often have to buy own supplies (expos, etc)
-lack of smooth operating procedures- any requests to admin need constant follow up, technology issues unresolved, secretaries and admin overworked, lack of "we value you and take care of you" atmosphere- more of a "fend for yourself"
-maintenance and custodial is poor (room vacuumed only every two months)
-community/ parents given too much weight in decision making, too much access to the top admin and board
-teachers not a part of decision making process in school level decisions

    Advice to Management

Parents need to pick up more costs, like sports, student parking, class supplies (i.e. art class fees, textbook fees)- it is ridiculous that the district is subsidizing these things while cutting back on supplies like paper and tape. Paper is necessary to doing our jobs well. Paper initiatives not well received by faculty.

put budget issues on ballot during even numbered years, when more of the general population votes (and not just the senior citizens)

Hire more admin from outside the district, who have more experience at running things smoothly.

I have been working at Higley Unified School District full-time

    Pros

In a community that is mostly community driven and cares about schools.
    Good connections with business partners

    Cons

Employee supports is very limited. Teachers often do not have time to meet together to work on common curriculum, even though that is the expectation. Teachers are often expected to find and acquire teaching products and resources.
Community often overrules decisions of various administrators in districts.
District administrative decisions are often driven by friendships and relationships.
    Looming budget cuts.
    Very high teacher turnover
As an employee, little to no career advancement. Department chairs do not receive any extra compensation or benefits for leadership position. Not campus leadership positions.

    Advice to Management

Focus on supporting young teachers is important as this population makes up high percentage of work force. Teachers are often seen as tools, not as people.
