I have been working at Hill Barth & King full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Working in a Top 100 accounting firm provides a lot of opportunity to work on different clients of varying complexities. The Pittsburgh, PA office is a tax heavy office but there remains a decent work-life balance as compared to other public firms for whom I have worked. The salary and benefit package is generous, you receive a decent amount of vacation time, and senior management is moving in a positive direction with employee appreciation. The principals are fair and there is a consistent message of giving back to the community by being involved. HBK has even started an HBK Cares initiative which encourages charitable giving and community service. Twice we've taken a day out of the office to do charitable work while we were paid. I truly believe that this is an up and coming firm even though its history goes back 60+ years.

    Cons

Our CPA Policy is lacking. Other firms pay for the materials and the seat fees for one sitting of all four parts plus a bonus upon passing; HBK finances the review classes for you and you repay the firm $100 per pay and you get a bonus upon completion. One nice thing they do is if you sit for the exam during the week you can charge each part of the exam to CPE time one time per part instead of taking PTO. You cannot contribute to the 401(k) for 90 days and you get no match for one year. The vesting period is three years.

    Advice to Management

Create a more generous CPA Policy and 401(k) match. These are extremely important when recruiting top talent from other regional or national firms.

    Pros

Good place to start your career and learn about different areas of accounting and business industries.

    Cons

Very little work life balance. Long hours are required. Hard work is not noticed or appreciated by management.

    Pros

The office location is decent. There are shops and restaurants around which makes it easier to escape the hostile environment.

    Cons

Too many to mention. Upper management turns a blind eye to issues and favoritism is a common practice.

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to the morale of your employees. Control the high school-like atmosphere.

  10. "An O.K> regional firm to work for"

Current Employee - Tax Supervisor in Wexford, PA
Current Employee - Tax Supervisor in Wexford, PA

    Pros

If you work very hard during tax season (and you need to make sure the Partners know it) they will give you a fair bonus. The people are nice. You can have a pretty normal work schedule without a hassle.

    Cons

Partners are concerned with their compensation. As part of the compensation formula, if too much time is put into an project and they can't bill for all of it, their compensation will suffer. This means they try to do too much work themselves rather than push it down. It is bad for career development because don't get as much experience as you should.

    Advice to Management

    Try to be more unified.
