I have been working at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Dedication to pets, nutrition and health. Employees- excellent caliber of people, collaborative and hard working. Competitive benefits- dental, medical and work smart policy.

    Cons

Not for everyone. Face paced, changing environment. Continuous pressure to improve. Two weeks vacation for starters, but the work smart program allows some flexibility for working at home 1x to 2x/ week.

    Advice to Management

Focus on innovation and future succession planning. Take time for mentoring the next generation.

    Pros

    Good pay
    People are friendly
Good experience learning to work in a corporate environment

    Cons

Didn't have a lot of interactions with other interns in my dept. I think it was different for other positions.
Changes in the company resulted in lack of work.

    Advice to Management

Offer cross training in other departments.

I worked at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

I met great professionals in there, most of them left or got fired but still nice to learn from them.

    Cons

An enormous number of employees have left on their own or through reorganization, the few left were even demoted or humiliated, the morale is non-existence. The myth is that Hill's is part of Colgate, legally it is, but I worked with Colgate 15 years and in Hill's 3 and there is absolutely nothing that could possible relate them. Colgate cares for people. Hill's promotes a back-stabbing environment where everyone loses, hence they have been tanking in the marketplace for years. Whoever can leave, leaves before it gets fired. I pity the people who are still working in there, there are so many better opportunities in the market, why not take a chance, why keep working in such sick environment for years to get the crumbs? It does not make sense.

    Advice to Management

Well most Management come from Europe or Colgate, they have little knowledge about Pet Nutrition - not that they care as Hill's is just a stepping stone for them. It seems that Colgate send them to Hill's to screw up and learn from their mistakes, anyway, who cares, is just Hill's, the forgotten child that will be end up selling at reduced price - assuming that the competition does not make it disappear from the marketplace first.

    I worked at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time

    Pros

Great products, with fantastic track record. Feels like they sincerely care about pet's health. Good payment & benefits for a lower cost of living (for Kansas). Mission statement is fabulous. Super Pet friendly environment (love bringing my dog to work everyday) Company store.

    Cons

Senior Management is not listening. The work/life balance is "smoke & mirrors"..TOO many Colgate people coming in to management roles. Trying to become Colgate, not living the mission statement. Outdated policies like dress code, telecommuting, vacation/flex time. Tools provided for work are sub-par.

    Advice to Management

Hill's is not, is not, IS NOT Colgate, don't make it Colgate. e-Commerce expansion GREAT!..
e-Commerce expansion direction and decisions WRONG!!, change them before is too late

I have been working at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Professional level Salary
    Great Product
    Great education and training
If you want to live in Topeka, KS then it has great potential for a long term career

    Cons

    Absolutely no marketing strategy
No flexibility for creative input of suggestions
You're title is "Territory Manager" but you don't manage anything, you just get micromanaged to death and beyond.
    Abusive management

    Advice to Management

Don't complain about another company beating you at sales because of their successful blitz marketing and then do NOTHING about your own marketing strategy. When you ask for input on how to change your approach to gain new customers, maybe you should take the advice instead of just discarding the new ideas because you can't handle change.

I have been working at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great diversity and great people in all functions. Opportunity to develop yourself as a leader. If you perform and it's in your career plans, there's a good chance to work abroad.

    Cons

Very conservative culture, with too much focus on financials rather than growing market share. Not very willing to experiment and decision making can be slow. With Colgate restructuring, the company is too lean and work can get overwhelming.

    Advice to Management

Push decision making down in the organization and take more risks. Celebrate successes more - for a 2 billion dollar company, we tend to nickel and dime everything.

I have been working at Hill's Pet Nutrition full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great health insurance, good benefits, nice people. Overall a really solid dependable company that will be there long term. Best compensation program for workers in town.

    Cons

Management has no clue what really goes on in production they worry about numbers not actual problems. They make decisions without understanding what the real issues might be.

    Advice to Management

Stop the good ole boy network and start hiring people for abilities not whether or not they gold with you or carpool with you. Experience matters and you are destroying a good company because your buddies are hand picked for jobs even though there are other people more qualified for the positions.

I worked at Hill's Pet Nutrition (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, awesome products to sell, and talented people

    Cons

Equal amount of hard work if not more than pharmaceutical reps, but base pay and bonus payout are way less. Company wants you to perform miracles with disjointed marketing materials, messaging, and programs. Their go to market plans in influencing the doctors by way of experts is far below health reps standards.
