I have been working at Hilliard City Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Hilliard does a great job of training staff in most areas, especially technology, and it works hard to maintain facilities and assets. Needed materials are readily available. The population is economically diverse and many opportunities for the arts and extra curricular activities for students abound.

    Cons

Too much emphasis is on technology as the be-all/end-all for effective learning. They claim to want 'blended' learning, but my experience is that this is not the case. Not electronic? Not acceptable, no matter that research strongly supports otherwise. Additionally, parents now rule the day and the classroom. This may well be true in all public school settings, but while expectations for classroom management are understandably high, the district's list of acceptable methods to reach that goal leaves teachers with very few options and feeling that their hands are tied. Moreover, administrators are too busy with meetings, observations, and mandated testing to deal with student discipline issues unless they are severe, leaving teachers little to use in the way of effective consequences. Administration doesn't want bad publicity from a public that is all too quick to complain on social media, so students are not held as accountable as they need to be. Teachers are frustrated, and many are talking of quitting to find another profession. Most teachers, likely in all districts, are putting on a positive face for fear of losing their jobs. Although most of us sacrifice our family time, sleep, energy, and income to attempt to do the job well, we are told that we need to do even more. Fault finding is perhaps mostly caused by sthe tate mandated evaluation system, but in certain buildings, teachers have become physically ill due to the stress of never feeling good enough.

    Advice to Management

I love teaching. I love kids. Tell us what we are doing right. If we need to improve, give us concrete examples of how to do so. Send more time side-by-side with us to show us what you envision. Most importantly, get out of your offices and back into the classrooms, not just to observe, but to actually teach again. Live in 'the trenches' for more than just an hour before trying to tell us how to do our job under all the demands you keep adding. Staying in your office and not in the classroom on our side of things creates a lack of credibility and respect from your staff. This is advice not only for building principals, but for central office personnel as well. It should be a requriemet that all administrators return to teaching at least one year out of every four or five.
