I have been working at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great benefits, wonderful co-workers, high enthusiasm, team spirit, opportunities for growth and advancement, innovative.

    Cons

Not a lot of access to company sponsored wellness options for staff that do not work downtown.

    Advice to Management

Keep up the high spirit but expand the wellness program options for staff to access a gym.

    Pros

Pay and benefits are better than most places, and frontlibe staff protected even without a union. Frontline staff are basically protected like there's a union.

    Cons

Pay very low but typical of FL/southern salaries. No union so pay scale and benwfits aren't as high aa they should be.

    Advice to Management

    Increase pay scales by 20%+.

I worked at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits and room for cross-organizational collaboration.

    Cons

Lack of effective communication and willingness to innovate or cut the "right" fat. The organization is so quick to implement a hiring freeze which would have been incredibly effective, but instead (because of the lack of communication), pushed out many awesome employees. For example, who knew that the County was currently on a hiring freeze? Unless you've heard via word of mouth, you would submit an application hoping to hear back without any notification of such. Seems like an unfortunate waste of time and resources when effective communication with the community and employees would easily solve the dilemma. A former employee recently heard that a Director no longer worked for the department prior to 98% of the Department - the same department who has yet to be formally notified. It's just too bad.

    Advice to Management

Perhaps it might be beneficial to either place a hold on the receipt of applications (for those jobs affected by the hiring freeze), or make some sort of announcement on the application portal (so as to not provide potential candidates with false hope).

    Pros

Great benefits package, working directly with the animals and some co workers are great. Things run smoothly when we are fully staffed but that is rare.

    Cons

Extremely physical work in an outside environment, it's not easy in the Summer. Unrealistic expectations from mgmt. Mgmt wants us to finish by a certain time but they keep giving us extra duties so it is impossible. The pay is laughable for the physicality of this job (ACA). Almost never get a chance to interact with the animals for more than a minute. The ACA's and Senior's are getting over worked, stressed and burnt out because there is no urgency to hire in the county and now there is a hiring freeze. Euthanasia. To save money they hire people with no experience and there is no hands on training with the animals and that becomes dangerous for all the employees, public and animals. Getting written up for the smallest things that there is no time for and written up bc the person before you messed up, it makes for a hostile work environment.

    Advice to Management

Pay better to attract experienced people. I think the Higher ups in the county should have to work in this position for a week to see what really goes on that is the only way they will ever have a real clue. Start the hiring process for a new employee when someone puts their 2 weeks in, not 2 weeks after they have left. Stop pulling temps to do other odd jobs, they were hired to help us out, not management. We do not have enough people at full staff so being under staffed is really placing all the stress on these positions and workers will start to get hurt. We work directly with the animals, aggressive and otherwise and also the public so having burnt out, stressed out workers in this position does no one any favors.

I have been working at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Great benefits. County car to drive home daily. Great medical, dental, and vision. Paid sick and vacation time

    Cons

Very political office. You are waiting for someone to retire in order to be promoted. Education does not get you anywhere

    Advice to Management

Pay attention to what people are saying. People are leaving and not being replaced.

I worked at Hillsborough County (Florida) part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Flexible schedules, great for students and/or anyone else that needs a bit of flexibility with commitments

Good starting pay, good amount of hours (mostly during summer)

Will provide the uniform and equipment necessary for guarding

Job is easy to perform, even with an overcrowded swimming area and an underdeveloped park

    Cons

Downtown leadership is disconnected from the park
     - This has led to changes that go unannounced to staff until the last minute

No real mobility - pay barely goes up yearly, and no job opportunities.

No benefits for part time or seasonal workers, even though summer hours are 40/wk

Forced Florida Retirement System joining for part time and seasonals, meaning pay is additionally taxed

    Advice to Management

Reconnect with the staff of the park. There is a lot of feedback and input that goes disregarded by the very people who work at the park. Changes can be good, but when they come unannounced and after years of nothing but the occasional complaint from downtown, those changes are challenged.

I have been working at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good health insurance, real pension plan, most people are friendly, excellent vacation package, and the guidelines for promotions are clearly set. Looks great on your resume, as companies know you can deal with all kinds of "red tape."

    Cons

Minimal work load, low expectations, micromanagement is prevalent, opportunities for advancement are scarce within entire administration, and there's no sense of urgency or accountability. Old world mentality, meaning it's more about who likes you than your actual skills.

    Advice to Management

Allow employee's the opportunity to do their jobs without interference. Create a training department that has comprehensive training/materials and mandatory classes. I've worked in more than one department and the issue is the same, everyone does what they feel is "right" without any frame of references for what is actually correct.

I worked at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Getting to love on the animals. Other than that, absolutely no pros whatsoever. The environment is horrible. Management doesn't care about staff. They don't care about the animals. They only care about themselves and their ridiculously high salaries.

    Cons

Lots of manipulative employees who only care for themselves. Low pay and a crazy amount of work for an extremely ungrateful Director (and management) who won't even know your name...EVER, unless you're in trouble and on the radar. Unbearable work environment. Terrible, TERRIBLE management. I wouldn't recommend any job at this place to my worst enemy. Extremely unprofessional bunch of nasty people!

    Advice to Management

    Dear BOCC & HR:

The director should be fired along with his bratty, EVIL little "favorites" who can do no wrong, and most of the other managers. The county needs to clean house at Hillsborough County Pet Resource Center (also referred to as Animal Services)!!!

I worked at Hillsborough County (Florida) full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Good talent and welcoming personalities at mid level and lower levels. Has the capability of producing great work for the county.

    Cons

The marketing department is a complete mess due to unqualified and petty senior leadership. Completely micromanaged to the point of ridiculousness.
