I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I loved working with my kids that I worked with. They were really my motivation everyday at work. I knew once I seen the smiles on their face it would brighten up my day. As well as the schedule was a good schedule. Well I liked it Example: You go to work from 5am - 10:15am then you take a break and you go to work from 1pm - 5:30pm. Overall it was a pretty good job.

    Cons

The pay was not as well as most jobs, but you are still able to make a way. Overall good company and good benefits.

I have been working at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

District provides "Planning Study Tools" for ELA and math/science calendars so that everyone in the county is together. Teachers have their own discretion to pick and choose what parts their students need. Students in my school are well-behaved for the most part.

    Cons

Pay schedules. They need to go to a flat out every two week paycheck system and stop doing escrow. Micromanagement in some schools that score poorly on tests.

I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great atmosphere with co-workers, functional equipment in labs, many resources, Very structured business approach, Has many different sources of self-assessment and success assessment

    Cons

Though student performance is expected to be tied to teacher performance, Student behavior is a mark against you as a teacher even if the kids refuse to accept any and all rules. After parent contact has failed to make a difference, there is no adequate reinforcement policy for bad behavior.

    Pros

Free Health Insurance for you (family is an option but you have to pay extra), no nights or weekends, PTO, option to work summer, ESCROW, Fl retirement options, ability to change schools, and the whole SHS is like a family it's a great group to be a part of.

    Cons

Lower pay than most, but they are constantly fighting for higher pay and give small raises periodically

I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The teachers union stays current and seems to work for tenured employees

    Cons

Admin offers no support to new teachers. I felt abandoned. Moved to another district

    Advice to Management

Make an effort to actually mentor new teachers and foster work life balance. Taking classes on nights and weekends don't leave much room for grading papers and managing multiple grade levels
