I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

There is room for growth. It is a large school district with a lot of opportunities.

    Cons

School Counselors have a lot of duties that do not fall under the ASCA model. It can be difficult to create a comprehensive school counseling program.

Making friends with coworkers, great hours, decent insurance

    Cons

Look at more successful school districts and follow their model.

I have been working at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of opportunities to move to another school if needed, it is complicated talk to a long timer for advice

    Cons

Some principals give you business related time off for state and ASHA conventions while others tell you to use your personal days. No consistency.

    Advice to Management

Communicate with employees, if they ask a question admin should respond, procedures are different from area to area, they contradict each other,

I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You get paid more than other counties for the same job.

    Cons

The schools have no money and the children get away with HORRIBLE behavior as the District refuses to give consequences for bad behavior. All is put on teachers who are told to "hold the line" and "deal with it in-house". These teachers often do not even have a classroom phone to make a call outside the school (which is now the largest means of discipline. This needs to be done during a 1 hour planning period which is often monopolized by "duties" like monitoring hallways, lunchrooms, bus ramps, and gymnasiums.

    Advice to Management

You are adults. Stop fearing parents and allowing children to run the show. Positive reinforcement is good, but you are ENCOURAGING these kids to behave worse and worse by never holding them accountable when they CHOOSE to do the wrong thing. Also, get some outside phones in classrooms if you're not going to support teachers.

I have been working at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

I am at a fantastic school with a great staff & admin.

    Cons

This county is toxic. The politics and “behind the scenes” drama is sickening. Children are a number. Too much pressure from the county. Decisions made on a whim with little to no communication. No one can ever provide a cut and dry answer. Every decision made seems to have a secretive motive. Many downtown are not in it for the children, which is sad considering the population in some Tampa schools
