I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

It is a challenging work environment with a lot of opportunities to develop professionally. The people I worked with were terrific and my immediate supervisor cared about me both as a person and about my professional growth.

    Cons

It is a very large system with the dysfunction that often comes from such organizational structures. The HR department changed my pay multiple times, seemingly on a whim, benefits are not good, and there is a general culture of that feels mismanaged and haphazard. As a whole, employees don't seem valued.

    Advice to Management

K-12 education is a hard profession and current funding structures and mandates make it even tougher. Making your employees feel valued and empowered can make a huge difference in helping them handle factors that are outside of the district's control.

I have been working at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Big county with many teaching opportunities

    Cons

Pay is nowhere near commensurate with the amount of work required and the expectations.

I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools (More than a year)

    Pros

Nice program that brings in out of specialty people into the teaching profession.

    Cons

    Where to start?

    1. Hostile and over demanding management.
    2. Impossible goals not taking into account that most parents and students don't care nor will work towards academic success. You are set up to fail over and over again.
    3. Low income students are bussed all over the county bringing down the quality of the neighborhood schools.
    4. Turnover rate for teachers is 900-1,000 a year. That should be a huge red flag to both management and anyone that wants to apply there to teach.

    Advice to Management

Your system is broken and cannot be repaired. You cater to the problem children and waster resources on them while ignoring the majority of quality kids who wish to learn. Budgets for teachers are a joke ($75 a year and must be spent by December? Seriously?)

Bussing is a drag on your system and steals education opportunities from the local kids.

I have been working at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

You can get hired as long as you have a degree, but be prepared to go to A LOT of training (up to 250 hours) in each of your first 3 years. Job security is great.

    Cons

Mandatory training can become burdensome, particularly if you're new to teaching and you're trying to learn a new profession. The district recently announced it is no longer giving out performance bonuses or schedule pay raises because they don't have the money, this is being fought by the union and ask arbitrator has been called upon. Many teachers are contemplating leaving the district for this reason. Many of the schools also have outdated infrastructure (A 40 year old a/c unit for example) but the district had again said they don't have the money to address the issue

    Pros

Large district with competitive salaries. It has always been easy to find a position close to home. The union is great and advocates for employees

    Cons

Not many opportunities for advancement, but not a knock on them. It’s the educational field as a whole. Unless you want to be an administrator, not a lot of options.

I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Every person from the principal down to the custodian loves the kids and truly wants to make school a fun, welcoming, empowering place to learn.

    Cons

Working in public education is a choice of the heart, not the wallet. You won't get rich except in satisfaction when you see the kids work so hard and then succeed.

    Advice to Management

Stop funding charter schools and invest more in your teachers and maintenance staff. The success of the kids completely depends on it.
