I worked at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The best feature of HCPS are the students who come into the school from various living environments to learn.

The educators are creative, cooperative and brilliant and, when supported by leadership, produce educational models that are nationally recognized.

    Cons

Not all schools are built equally so you have to sit and gauge leadership and staff to see if the institution is right for your pedagogy.

    Advice to Management

Please make sure that the leadership you put in place match the desired outcomes and expectations of educators and students.

I have been working at Hillsborough County Public Schools full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Teachers work hard and as a team, to provide all students with the tools necessary to take command of their future. Most students have parents that are concerned and meet with the teachers on open house days.

    Cons

The amount of non-paid work done after hours is bordering on a lawsuit. The evaluation system was done for Gates money and was a rubric that came from a third grade teacher in Texas. All teacher were supposed to teach the same way. The evaluation was not based on the students performance in the end or the fact that the students won six national championships and a world championship. I had an Agriculture teacher and an English teacher evaluate an Internet routing network setup. They were clueless. Videoing the evaluation was not allowed, which teachers found out about afterwards. Too bad my classroom had 8 cameras setup to record the room at all times.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your teachers, all of them, not just your buddy. Let the end result speak for itself. Go to www.ratemyteachers.com and see what the students and parents have to say. I only had one student unable to conquer the digital divide in 13 years. Let the teachers video the evaluations so they can understand what the score is all about. Stop expecting every teacher to teach like a third grade teacher from Texas. Stop the head damaging sports and replace with a technology challenge that will stimulate the brain (SkillsUSA or FBLA).

    Pros

They don't require you to be licensed. You get a lot of days off, plus summers. Depending on the school(s) you work at you have the autonomy to work with kids how you see fit, based upon school needs. Just make sure you're meeting the requirements for your annual evaluation and you will be fine.

    Cons

It's a county job, therefore the pay is not the best. There's always this underlying fear of being forced into early retirement, fired or moved to a different site due to budget cuts

    Cons

    Pay is low
They will threaten to end your department
    Or pay cuts.
    They always complaining about something
They change policies all the time.
There's no since for care at times

    Advice to Management

If you got good staff treat they like you are happy that they are there and valued. And give your after school program better benefits. Tell all employees that no one position makes you better than the other. We all work in the school system.
