I have been working at Hillwood full-time

    Pros

Great culture, great family oriented company, cutting edge and forward thinking company. Great work and life balance.

    Cons

No cons, great company to work for.

    Advice to Management

Greater recognition of support groups and other essential business units that are not directly involved in sales, marketing, and development

I worked at Hillwood full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The place is not as bad as previous reviews have stated. Its bad but not awful every job has its bad parts and good parts. Senior management as in the top 2 people are approachable everyone else is just trying to get a slice of the pie and will stomp on your throat to get it. The new office is nice and you get free coffee. The company at one point was entrepreneurial but I never saw that. I am sure the guys who worked at Hillwood in the 1990s had numerous entrepreneurial opportunities but those days are long gone. I would say the company resembles are large corporation and management still treated the company like a small shop which hurt employees. Employees should be told this going in but many when they start are shocked about how ridged, stiff, and regimented the culture is instead of entrepreneurial. This is not a bad or good thing just a cultural thing. Senior leadership is philanthropic which is great!

    Cons

A lot of turnover especially in my group not one person I started with was still working there when I left. Main issues are they hire dirt cheap employees out of college or for a second job out of college with the typical fan boy Perot label and when these employees realize that flying on a private plane once or twice is really not worth the hours, crummy coworkers, and the low pay they leave for greener pastures. When these employees left I was stuck training the next batch who then would leave for the same reasons and I was stuck again training the next batch. Most frequent reason these employees left from what I was told was lack of pay, lack of opportunity, low moral, lack of ability to learn for a first or second job right out of college. One of my coworkers got told to cut his hair because it was getting too long his response was great, "When do I have time to get a haircut I am here every weekend and I am here early every morning and I work every night. Please XXXXXXX tell me when!" Employees are berated by their superiors for asking questions about a system/process that was probably built by Jonas Woods in 2004 while trying to figure out how to make Victory park not a disaster.

Upper management is known around Dallas/US to lead other development firms on for months about a possible jv that will never happen, which has soured the brand greatly.

    Advice to Management

Be honest with yourself about the culture.

I have been working at Hillwood full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Free sodas in fully stocked fridge. 401k plan is nice. The rest of my words are to fill up the 20-word requirement for pros.

    Cons

I don't know why, but there are many rude associates with bad attitudes who have worked there a long time . Tons of ageism going on due to the Perot 'old school' mentality - older workers are rude to younger millennials who bring new ideas. Management couldn't be more aloof, and they purposely keep Ross in the dark when it comes to internal situations that aren't perfect. Anyone under a director title is treated as a replaceable grunt worker. Admins are treated like Hillwood princesses since those are the only people that high executives interact with outside of each other. No employee loyalty bc they know hiring cheap work is more cost effective than actually fixing infrastructure problems. Super political place (no pun intended). There isn't one woman in Ross's 30 person+ executive team (who isn't part owner/family member). The egos in this company are utterly fascinating - I've never seen so many men act like fan girls in my life or be so cut throat in my life. Healthcare benefits are medium to poor.

    Advice to Management

Try to care about any associate outside of the white man millionaire exec team and the admin princesses. Do something about the infamously rude associates for once. Treat millennials better for they will one day be the next generation in charge.

I have been working at Hillwood full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

A nice office and a new office has been built. Fully stocked fridge with sodas.

    Cons

Long hours, low pay, aloof management, rude coworkers, attitude problem among coworkers.

    Advice to Management

Actually vet people before you hire them. Numerous individuals have a bad attitude and are rude to their peers and ruins the culture.

    Cons

    Advice to Management

I worked at Hillwood full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very competitive pay, countless incentives, (cash/non-cash) generally good people. The parent company, Hillwood is amazing. They are a helpful and caring bunch, and do a lot to make sure you are compensated for your hard work...But not at the Airport/ATX.

    Cons

At first I just thought it was a joke, but I really think the Airport stays ridiculously understaffed on purpose. They have the highest turnover of any of the business units, and there's a good reason for it. Not everyone wants to work 50+ hours a week, have a completely arbitrary schedule, and frowned upon when you try to leave after a 13 hour day... Airport management structure is about as corrupt as could be. It's a very "good ole boys" club, and you're either in that group, or out of it. If you are considering a job at the airport, be sure to ask about their turnover! (9 people in 6th months, none of which were terminated. Not just front line employees, this was all levels of the department.)

    Advice to Management

Stop promoting the riffraff and driving off your hardest working employees.

    Pros

Great benefits, fair compensation, smart employees, very professional, lots of nice perks, well respected in community, very entrepreneurial, high quality projects

    Cons

Executives need to clearly articulate vision and strategy, compensation programs need to be more cleary defined and communicated, divisions need to work more closely and in harmony

    Advice to Management

Hillwood is a really good company, please define and articulate the vision and I promise the team will follow, there is a big gap from good to great.
