Excellent company with lots of exciting challenges ahead!

    Pros

    - Terrific mission and company culture (employees believe in getting people outside!) - CEO is amazing and listens to every employee regardless of level - Small team means lots of fun projects to work on and little mundanity - Company is growing rapidly - Plenty of recognition and appreciation from team members across the company - Compensation package is top tier and very competitive - Very easy to have an immediate impact due to company size and structure - Fully remote with great perks, unlimited PTO you can actually use, and great work/life balance!

    Cons

    - 401k matching program isn't great (you have to wait a few months to be eligible) - Company moves dynamically on initiatives, so not the best place to be if you prefer a consistent schedule - Difficult to find help since the company is very lean

    Just the beginning

    Pros

    - a mission you can fall in love with: Get more people outside! - massive opportunity; still early so plenty of upside remaining - overall team quality is increasing; great investors, too - growing business means scale and tough technical challenges to work on - being a marketplace means interesting DS/ML problems ahead - future is pretty clear so it comes down to execution - COVID was tough but made the company stronger and smarter

    Cons

    - now that camping/outdoors is blowing up, we have a target on our back (hey Airbnb) - like any early-stage startup, it can be intense, chaotic, and uncertain at times; don't join if this is not for you - lots to do, very little people and resources to do it (typical startup)

Typical Startup Pretending to Save the World

    Pros

Great mission, enjoyable perks and office, lovely coworkers.

    Cons

Leadership is weak. Much of the company's lip service around caring about people and the planet is for marketing value and little else. When COVID-19 hit, Hipcamp decided almost immediately (early April) to cut nearly half of its staff, and now bookings are skyrocketing -- go figure. Rather than waiting a few weeks to see how the situation would pan out, the company made it clear it cares about profit above all else. This is not a values-led company. It's a company like any other, so don't expect much beyond that. Plus: be prepared for plenty of micro-aggressions and little in the way of support if you're a person of color.

Great mission, cool product, aggressive leader

    Pros

Hipcash getting people outside great investors (was a cool office space) democratized open data great coworkers campouts fair compensation

    Cons

CEO is aggressive towards employees in an unhealthy way. Seen her verbally attack others, quick to cut them off, and plays favorites. Without going into details, the CEO is one of the companies greatest employee assets and also its biggest obstacle. trying to do too much with too little resources expected to work pretty ridiculous hours in general different rules for different people. Friend of the CEO or being there early gets all the favoritism shortsighted doesn't listen to the experts in the chair but rather outsources ideas this business has tight margins

    Could be great

    Pros

Working with a great mission of getting more people outside

    Cons

There is a lot of focus on the health of the business, but not so much the health of the employees. If you need something to help you make your job easier, it takes a lot of time to get approval, most of the time it isn't. You may be tasked with things you're not necessarily supposed to be in charge of because hiring is deemed the last resort, which also hinders your abilities for promotion. There isn't a lot of trust given to employees, most folks are not rewarded or recognized for their hard work.

    Efficient, values-driven organization

    Pros

Strong leadership, collaborative work environment, top tier investors, inclusive and supportive values, and extremely sharp and motivated teammates working to fulfill a worthwhile mission.

    Cons

Tight margins means doing more with less. This will benefit the org in the long run, however.

Special place with the expected growing pains

    Pros

Working for a company that's genuinely trying to make the world a better place and connect more people to nature. Creating economic opportunities for small business owners, farmers, and landowners. Helping facilitate really wonderful experiences for people from all over the world. Getting to work with incredibly smart, fun, dynamic people who are continually learning from and respect each other. Treated like adults who can meet goals, integrate our work & personal lives, and manage our days. Other perks: beautiful, dog-friendly workplace, discounts on Hipcamp stays, stocked lunch, fun company outings.

    Cons

The typical growing pains you see at lots of early, growth-stage startups. We need to remember that while we're growing rapidly, we should constantly prioritize creating and adhering to systems that will support internal culture and career growth. Growth at any cost is antithetical to who we are.

Awesome company filled with awesome people

    Pros

I truly love coming to work every day at Hipcamp. Everyone here is incredibly driven by our mission, friendly, hardworking and down to earth. There's a level of trust among the employees that I haven't seen anywhere else — which leads to a high level of autonomy and agency to get the job done. At the same time, I would say it's a very collaborative culture, with people from all sides of the business coming together to shed a different perspective. I learn something new everyday, whether it's something related to my job or a new way to make frittata (yes, we cook often). Couldn't ask for anything more!

    Cons

Usual growing pains of working for a small startup — things move fast and priorities shift.

    Pros

Mission driven, women founder & CEO, great time off and vacation policy, amazing new leadership team. 3 months parental leave, 401k setup, decent medical/dental, growing lightning fast, whatever snacks you want on demand, cool new office, hipcamp dollars to spend camping and then a huge discount after that.

    Cons

Could use catered lunch or breakfast
