I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Friendly work environment, flexible working, local management are generally very good and communicate well with staff. Modern building with canteen and free parking.

    Cons

Sometimes there is too little performance review or individual accountability to the point that you feel like you're carrying the slackers. A light cull would work wonders.

    Advice to Management

Come out of your ivory tower and communicate. Communicating is not the same thing as standing up once a quarter and reading a bunch of sales slides followed by a few filtered questions.

    Pros

There were some non-important now as they fired people.

    Cons

They kicked most staff out from Bracknell, UK as they slowly shutdown HNAS product.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

HDS lets the companies that it acquires get on with it. The environment in Bracknell is relaxed and upbeat, but there is a real focus on code quality and pride in the product. Teams are motivated, and there is a good humour in the office. The management hierarchy here is very flat -- you can have a friendly chat with the senior managers in the kitchen, which is well stocked with free snacks and refreshments. There are plenty of company outings. There is very little involvement from HR, and few HR loops to go through. All HR and sales people are elsewhere -- the building is almost solely populated by engineers.

The work itself is interesting, because the product is great. People here are very smart. Automation teams work to make your life as an engineer easier, and a lot of the boring stuff gets done in the background. There's a genuine sense of being at the forefront of the industry, in a company that is not only succeeding, but also developing new products and having new ideas.

    Cons

The implementation of agile leaves a little to be desired, but where doesn't it? And the benefits system is really best suited to sales (most of HDS-specific employees work in sales) -- it'd be better tied to the work we're doing now, not the work completed years ago that's now being sold! Others have complained a little about career progression and pay progression, but I haven't experienced that.

Overall, the pros greatly outweigh whatever nit-picky cons I can try to think up here.

    Advice to Management

Keep it going! Bracknell is a great office in part, I suspect, because HDS lets its engineering blocks get on with it. Don't ruin that by getting too involved or micro-managing the companies you acquire.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Working in one of the engineering units, it's a really pleasant atmosphere most of the time, colleagues are typically good people, the products are interesting as is the work.

    Cons

The attitude of senior directors towards engineers is very poor.
I can't speak about the sales side of the company (almost the entire organisation) for which bonuses and performance related pay presumably make up the shortfall, but for engineers, HDS actively allows salaries to stagnate. There is no annual review cycle. Pay rises are not ring-fenced and local directors are made to balance the budget between people and other costs, meaning pay rises only ever occur if there is a bumper quarter and there is never sufficient budget to go round. The only engineers at HDS who are paid a market rate are the ones who started in the last six months.

    Advice to Management

If you want to achieve your engineering dreams, help your engineers to achieve their life dreams!

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Relaxed working environment. No formal dressing. Not much pressure. Relaxed working schedule.

    Cons

No one really cares about helping you progress. Productivity rarely gets over 10%. Everybody cares about his report. Cooperation doesn't exist.

    Advice to Management

Managing doesn't mean adding items to the backlog. You have to see what you have and what's right for each one to do. Since you're hiring graduates, make use of them.
Just because you know, it doesn't mean I automatically know. Invest time to explain.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

This is definitely the most innovative, fast paced and dynamic company I have worked so far and this is the reason it is growing fast in strength and size.
The pioneering spirit is not just a nice sentence on the company booklet but rather a real value for all the employees. An agile but disciplined approach is embraced by all the departments.
All of this does not come at the price of the work/private life balance as working hours are flexible with the possibility to work from home.

    Cons

The Bracknell (UK) office is OK but still not at the level of other top IT companies (location, furniture, services)

    Pros

Friendly and helpful people, interesting work, casual environment and free coffee, what more could you want

    Cons

So far the only complaint would be some of the training being boring and unnecessary

    Advice to Management

    Keep at it, everything's great

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

HDS provides a working environment where doing things right is very much encouraged. As an employee, I feel genuinely valued and the work-life balance is excellent.

    Cons

Investment in employee training could be higher. Holiday allowance starts quite low but does increase over time.
