I worked at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Smart people, stable company. They are willing to take on new graduates and train them up in the industry. They follow industry best practices around version control, code review, bug tracking, and mostly choose good tools. You can have a family & a normal life, and get promoted from within. Many people who have stayed there for 5+ years and seem happy.

    Cons

Technology feels outdated, not enough effort into delivering a high-quality modern product. Large organization with many global offices, different teams can feel disconnected. Company values sales more than engineering. Not enough compensation to keep top talent. Legacy codebases with too many features and technical debt.

    Advice to Management

Give engineering more power to make important decisions and offer better compensation for engineers.

    Pros

Good pay and benefits, easy hours. Remote people are paid at Silicon Valley levels.

    Cons

No management direction. All sales focused. Just an OEM/Reseller.

    Advice to Management

Avoid people churn. Focus on results. Little feedback up or down.

    Pros

    Nice people
    Comfortable work environment
    Decent benefits
    Fair Compensation
    Quality Hardware

    Cons

    Somewhat reactive Product/Services Strategy
Unable to cut-the-cord and eject unsuccessful product/business lines
Some managers and executives are perfect examples of "The Peter Principle"
Poor work/life balance across entire staff - many are idle, while others are buried.
Onboarding compensation levels for new hires is unfair to existing staff.

    Advice to Management

If it's not selling...dump it. If their not contributing...reassign them. If they are managing poorly...demote them. If it costs more than it makes...fix it or dump it.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Competitive pay, great place to learn

    Cons

Old boys network. Individual goals and objectives not clearly set it measured.

    Advice to Management

Must be better at measuring performance, both at a team/org level and annindividul level. Executive leaders are not held accountable and certain ethical boundaries are moved to fit a given action

I worked at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Decent people and good benefits just doesn't seem to make the grade when you're constantly 6-months to 1-year behind your competitors.

    Cons

Sales management was a revolving door of poor decisions which ended in HR removals (3 of them) during my time. Executive management chooses to sit in their Ohio Home Offices with maybe 3 visits per year to one of the biggest markets in the US, and then wonder why the numbers are not good. Chicago Office continues to under perform from lack of support and coverage by VP levels and above.

Sales Engineering which support the Chicago Sales team, do not compete well nor do they know Hitachi's own products beyond PowerPoint... This is nothing more than a lazy attitude as there are ample opportunity to shadow PS installation. 's for sales actually made.

With absolutely no answer to today's market challenges (Flash Storage w/ efficiencies & No Cloud) stay away.

    Advice to Management

Figure out deduplication and Cloud... Otherwise figure out how to start selling pieces of the company.

I worked at Hitachi Data Systems (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Environment is fast paced and ever changing; makes for interesting and dynamic job content. Compensation and benefit packages are very fair.

    Cons

Lots of turnover at executive level is cause for concern on whether culture can stay intact. Storage Industry is very competitive which could lead to a lot more financial pressures.

    Advice to Management

Be transparent with employees and keep the culture intact. Make sure the goals, mission and values are truly put into everyday practice.

    Pros

Great people and great work environment. Fast paced with a focus on latest software development technologies and design approach.

    Cons

It's an engineering school of thought here. The process is still being nailed down other than that it's a great place to learn and have a career.
