I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Best reasons to work at HDS: team culture, company & team celebrates accomplishments, available training, good technology

    Cons

Employee annual assessment is rated on a bell curve, using the team as the bell population.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    - Employees are loyal, respectful and generally collaborative
    - Strong, loyal customer base (but a declining market overall)
    - If you are a top performer, you don't get any extra performance bonus but you can ask for and expect an increase in responsibilty
    - Some potential bright spots with IoT, Content and Analytics offerings
    - Recently let go of some leaders who were not very effective
    - Starting to hire competent and experienced outsiders

    Cons

    - There is constant lip-service around change/transformation with very little details
    - Many employees just don't have the skills, experience or initiative to change
    - Employees are not rewarded based on individual performance, but rather on company performance overall
    - For how much we preach data and digital transformation, our systems are outdated and it's challenging to get the data needed to validate business decisions and changes
    - The best employees are on the verge of leaving because management is rehashing the same talking points at every town hall with precious few details, plans or resources committed to making changes
    - Compensation systems are outdated and no clear performance management; no stock options or RSUs
    - A lot of individual contributor roles rather than well structured and high-performing teams that keep each other accountable

    Advice to Management

    - Start listening to outside opinions and stop letting inferior Japanese management practices and excessive reporting distract you from the task at hand
    - Understand that it will take significant near-term investment to execute real transformation of our organization and catch up to the market

I worked at Hitachi Data Systems as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Work from home. Reasonable hourly rate.

    Cons

Micro management. Extreme work hour expectations. Little concern for health (mental and physical) of the workers. Workers are treated as expendable.

    Advice to Management

What you think works to motivate employees does not.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems (More than 3 years)

    Pros

    * Good place to learn about storage technologies
    * Home/life balance

    Cons

Utilize too many contractors so the turn-over rate is very high.

    Advice to Management

Clear/concise focus the product directions to minimize number of groups with only small number of permanent employees.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Lots of smart people with diverse experience and ability to make HDS and Hitachi a really great company. Good work/life balance. The linkage to Hitachi's overall Social Innovation vision is inspiring.

    Cons

Senior leaders and executives hesitate to make the tough decisions and transitions necessary for this to be a company that survives. Product Management and some of the engineering teams in particular need a refresh of talent at leadership level. For years they have been allowed to lack innovation and have failed to get ahead of market trends or move with speed.

    Advice to Management

Refresh the Product Management and Engineering leadership. Make quicker, bolder decisions.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The fitness center and cafe are great on-site perks and the company is filled with a lot of great people.

    Cons

Though the company tries to talk about work-life balance, projects are often scheduled in ways that tip that scale. The company favors mid-career professionals and it's hard to get proper respect and compensation if you're not "mid-career."

    Pros

Not a public company and therefore driven by longer term thinking

    Cons

It takes time to turn a ship this size when the market changes

I worked at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Very relaxed working schedule - leave early or work from home; as long as you finish your work, there are no issues. Individual contributors are encouraged to explore and try new technologies.

    Cons

Too many layers of management and too many stakeholders. Large amount of meetings about nothing. Management does not seem very motivated. Projects are constantly delayed. Compensation is unfairly low.

    Advice to Management

Managers need to be chosen carefully. If your leadership is not inspiring, then the team members will not be the best. Spend less time on politics and more on your team.

I have been working at Hitachi Data Systems full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Long term, strategic mentality in approach to business. Benefits package seems to be first rate.
Customer and sales focused, so unproductive people tend to move on. Either you are selling, or you are taking care of customers, or the business mechanics.

    Cons

Not a good place if you need to be closely managed, you will be given ample rope to hang yourself.

    Advice to Management

Good global sales kickoff. Trends and momentum are in the right direction.
