I have been working at Hobart and William Smith Colleges full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You will work with some of the most dedicated people you can find. Good benefits.

    Cons

Management refuses to mentor and if necessary remove the people holding back forward progress. Very much "old boys club" mentality in athletics. Salary well under average. Very little concern for healthy work/life balance. No effort to retain good people. Very hesitant and resistant to work towards necessary change. Maintaining appearances is the #1 concern. Pushed to promote corporate alliance members rather than best choice.

    Advice to Management

Mandate ongoing leadership training for people promoted into position of power. Have a better job performance review taking coworker, staff, and athletes into account. Reevaluate salaries compared to other comparable institutions. Implement structures that promote and allow health work/life balance.

I worked at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (More than a year)

    Pros

The faculty and staff there are absolutely amazing. They are so supportive of one another and so easily approachable. There really truly is an atmosphere of mutual respect and teamwork.

    Cons

Sometimes it is very uncomfortable and difficult to approach the Principal. Sometimes she has an attitude that deters people from asking for help or guidance. I was afraid to give her suggestions, as she does not accept constructive criticism well.

    Advice to Management

I would say that the Principal should absolutely work on being more approachable. She is there to be a support to the staff; everyone should be working together as a team to improve the school and the students' education. It should be running as a well-oiled machine, not teachers who are afraid to speak up if they see an area of improvement.

I worked at Hobart and William Smith Colleges (More than a year)

    Pros

They offer excellent benefits. You will have nice coworkers. The President is a really personable guy who knows most everyone by name.

    Cons

They don't pay very much, the work is incredibly difficult and under appreciated. Most students are really entitled and get whatever they want if they make a big enough stink.

    Advice to Management

I think people need higher wages to afford to live and take care of their family. Also, if you give an entitled student whatever they want, you don't teach them anything.

Beautiful town, however, not much going on for staff that does not cater to students.

    Pros

Benefits and working with students is the best thing about this job.

    Cons

Faculty make you feel like an outsider.
Alot of arguing at faculty meeting and through campus wide emails about petty issues.

I have been working at Hobart and William Smith Colleges full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Rewarding to be a part of an educational system
    Beautiful campus
    Walkable campus
Making progress in staff and faculty diversity

    Cons

A little sea leaves little room for the faculty who feel they are big fish.
    Staff are an afterthought
History of privileged students has given HWS a bad reputation in the community.

    Advice to Management

Invest in staff development. Get rid of those who are not pulling their weight.
