I worked at Holcim (US) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Very flat and international organization with friendly and intelligent people. All depends on the department you work at though.

    Cons

It is very hard to grow there, especially for a female. It is like having a glass ceiling.

    Advice to Management

Management should care less about themselves and more about their employees' growth and development. Only verbal praise does not count.

    Pros

Holcim US was a great place to work. There were many employee activities to keep the morale high and team building with other departments.

    Cons

Holcim merged with LaFarge and the company has changed. This is be a huge adjustment for those that stick around.

I worked at Holcim (US) full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Holcim is a leader in cement manufacturing especially since their merger with Lafarge. Most of the people there are pretty decent to work with and the benefits were pretty good while I was there.

    Cons

Some of the upper managers and lower level managers, at least at Holcim US and Holcim Canada, were pretty hard on their subordinates. They expected more than could be delivered without clear direction especially in the IT department. Some lower level managers also thought they were a lot more important than they were and liked to abuse what little power they had. It's funny how my original supervisor didn't like my work and threatened me with my job on a few occasions, then half way through my employment I got a new manager and they liked my work and I had no issues going forward.

    Advice to Management

Start looking at your lower level managers and clean house. There was a lot of people talking behind the backs of each other and it made for a less than ideal work environment. Also fear mongering is not the way to run your staff and keep them in line.

Great Company to work for with good Safety program. Good pay and benefits. Management cares about your career goals and they have a good network throughout the entire company for helpful resources. They care about the community they are associated with. very good standards

    Cons

Long hours during extended outages which happen about twice a year. It's part of the industry.

I worked at Holcim (US) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There was always the opportunity to learn new technologies and grow within your career. Fast paced IT environment. Compensation was very fair.

    Cons

Some of the locations (business) were a distance from major metropolitan areas which made it difficult, at times, to find adequate talent in certain areas.

    Advice to Management

As you continue through the merger transformation you need to increase the rate and content of the communications to your employees.

I have been working at Holcim (US) full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Pros to this job are the potential for advancement, especially if willing to relocate globally. The culture is positive and safety is always at the forefront of each day. Great people and high production rates are a common occurrence each day.

    Cons

Some of the challenges working here are the daily struggles of planning and preventing unplanned shutdowns with such high production targets. We achieve our goals generally, but it seems when it rains, it pours. It's tough to be open minded to the world outside while being so focused on our world within.

    Advice to Management

I feel raises and profit sharing could be more advantageous toward management who work well above the "expected" hours due. Public stock trading would be a nice incentive as well.
