I worked at Holiday Retirement full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The opportunity to provide compassionate care for 150+ extraordinary seniors; putting smiles on their faces and adding quality to their lives. When allowed, doing "what is right".

    Cons

Micromanagement beyond compare. An excessive emphasis on sales and an ever diminishing corporate commitment to "the resident experience". Recent change in operating structure and philosophy are all driven to enhance the bottom line, and ultimate sale of the company. All of this will lead to the demise of Holiday, the premier provider of independent living for seniors, as it was once known.

I have been working at Holiday Retirement full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I love being able to help others find the best place to live. Helping seniors to be safe and happy and their families find peace of mind is why I do this job.

    Cons

After 43+ years of success and growth, Holiday is changing their structure. Why? I keep hearing that it is for"a better work/life balance" for managers but that can't really be the case. The change to a GM instead of couples is understandable and should have a positive response, however, now they are moving the managers out of the building all together - there will be no one on site over night, not even a security guard. This is what has elevated us from every other senior living company and now it's going away. What I don't want is for the corporate management to blame this on the community managers. They have their own agenda with Fortress - the community residents, managers and associates are the farthest from their mind. It has been easy for me to "sell" this lifestyle because I believe in it, I don't feel that any longer.

    Advice to Management

If it's not broke why are you breaking it?

    Pros

Working with seniors like walking history books

    Cons

Dysfunctional upper management. Accountability is a one way street. Failure to serve best interests of their customers that would naturally result in higher occupancy and profits. They make decisions only for profits and have abusive rent increases of up to 7% per year when that increase can not be justified pressing what the market will bear. Unethical in their dealings with customers and staff that while they say no working off the clock many employees are forced to work off the clock because they care or to meet unreasonable timelines or cut corners etc

    Advice to Management

Stop the lip service and genuinely focus on serving the customers to achieve 100% occupancy with less marketing and higher profits. Genuinely listen to the people in the trenches rather than just looking for "Yes" people. Take a look in the glassdoor mirror and hold themselves mutually accountable

I worked at Holiday Retirement (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Working with the senior population

    Cons

On-site manager program - never away from the job; company puts profit over service and the outcomes are: no staff development; low wages, poor working conditions (always short-staffed); pressure to perform at the highest levels of sales success without support; broken promises (work as a couple - for a short period of time and then separated).

    Advice to Management

You are not on the cutting edge of senior care - you are more like the Dollar Tree!!!

I have been working at Holiday Retirement part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The hours are minimal and high turn over means you'll be a shift supervisor in no time!

    Cons

There's no extra pay for holiday's (ironic...) for part time workers, yet they mandate you work holiday's. Lots of drama in the work place and the management and cooperate do nothing about it to address to the issues a particular worker might have with another worker (i.e. lay everything out with everyone. Instead everyone has their own, basically secret, meeting with management). Part time workers are feed crap all the time, and because they're at the bottom they can't do anything about it. Bullied multiple times by the same worker over and over again. Discriminates against age.

    Advice to Management

Fire people when they need to be fired. Don't let your best employees walk out the door because of 1 employee. 6 people to date have quite because of 1 person. They ain't gonna bully me out of job.

I worked at Holiday Retirement full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

I loved working with the Residents and the Associates at my community.

    Cons

Horrible Lead Managers who resented us from the very beginning and refused to train us properly. Had a problem with my husband and I being an interracial couple. Made our lives a living hell and Corporate was no help.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees when there is a problem and help them when there is a hostile work environment. Live up to your vision and principles.
