    Pros

I took this job to travel, get playing experience, and pay off my student loans. Room and board is covered, and the performance schedule allowed me to get off the ship and explore the ports almost every day. I really enjoyed the itineraries and got to meet many wonderful people from all over the world. Lots of big personalities and fun people in the entertainment department. Overall, it was a great gig out of school.

    Cons

It's a corporate environment. Everything comes down to ratings. This is understandable, but it limited our capacities within our roles. The trio I played in was not encouraged to play anything outside of a somewhat limited repertoire with a heavy dose of rhumbas, cha-chas, waltzes, etc. Band morale suffered while playing 5 sets a night for several months in this environment. But that is the gig. You put up with it to enjoy the lifestyle and travel.

    Advice to Management

Trust that your musicians will be able to put their own fingerprint on the music and still keep dancers happy.

I have been working at Holland America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Work from home, no commute time, company supplies computer. Travel benefits have all but been eliminated, many dissatisfied and unhappy employees

    Cons

NO support or communications from upper management, employees are expendable. Travel benefits have all but been eliminated. Very rarely find anyone in management that cares or even knows you or about you. Please keep in mind, a year ago I told people I would never leave this company.

    Advice to Management

Won't bother, they don't care or listen when you do express yourself

I worked at Holland America as a contractor (More than a year)

    Pros

Travel, exotic, multi cultural, great benefits, great perks, atmosphere

    Cons

Pay, time away, management, hours, pay differential

    Advice to Management

Work on incentive to grow within the seaborne position. Too much focus on head office not on the people that are your product.

I have been working at Holland America full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

It is actually a really fun place to work. People are friendly, smart, talented. Free cruises and other travel perks. Many work from home. Nice 9/80 work schedule. Company president well liked.

    Cons

Lots of change in the last 2 years since the merger with Princess Cruises. The changes continue to this day and some seem to pedal the company backwards. Be adaptable and open to a constantly changing environment.

    Advice to Management

Senior management, please look more closely at your employees' day-to-day functions to learn about real issues and celebrate wins. As we the employees adapt with merger changes, we ask that you also adapt with the times. The employees of today need to be heard and appreciated.
