I worked at Holland & Barrett Retail (Less than a year)

    Pros

-Fantastic store team, had a great relationship with my manager.
-Pay is decent, even without benefits.
    -Good commission and bonuses.
    -Training is comprehensive.

    Cons

-Area and regional management is pitiful and completely unsupportive, even accusatory.
-Pay is affected by customer satisfaction surveys. It's unfair the means of putting food on the table is in the hands of the general public who often are unaware of this fact.
    -CEO is completely self absorbed
-Communication between stores, head office and technical support is rubbish

I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail (More than a year)

    Pros

The only pro I can think of is the training that you receive. Although it can be hit and miss with some employees depending on what area you're working in and what role.

    Cons

Prepare to be bombarded by KPIs and targets, you need to sell this with this, increase on this, 4 item link sale, Rewards for Life cards, magazines, samples, customer feedback cards is just a few of the things you have to remember. There's always a shortage of staff so be prepared if you're management to not have a lot of time off if any. You're never acknowledged for the work that you do and the time that you put in or rewarded for it. The area manager is always on your back asking why something hasn't been done, why you haven't met a certain target etc. Just all in all very stressful along with all the tests and training updates that you have to do in between.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge staff for the hard work that they do and the hours that they put in. Stop with all the excessive targets all of the time and give staff the right promotions who deserve them and have worked hard for them not to people that have been with the company for two minutes or happen to know the management.

I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

To be honest there is very few, 25% discount that's about it for me!

    Cons

There is actually so much wrong with this company, I could be here a while typing. Manager / management have no idea how to treat their staff, constant pressure not an enjoyable place to work at all. They never send the right promotion kit for you to implement the promotion, and then your asm does a visit, this that and everything is wrong even after you have reported the items. Never any praise. Lone trading is also a big issue. No support from anyone. I feel like a robot in work, constantly asking customers question after question, rfl, mag, buy one try one, sampling and that's just at till, also asked to wear ridiculous badges as well as the two badges that are to be worn already, and loyalty lead where you wear rfl cards on a key ring and approach customers on the floor and sign them up. ABSOULTELY RIDICULOUS!! This is a health shop I have never worked anywhere where I felt so stressed and under appreciated. This is only few things wrong with this company, stay away if your thinking of joining Holland and Barrett.

    Advice to Management

GET YOUR HEAD OUT OF THE CLOUDS!! If your staff are happy your customers will be happy. Twice now I have filled out employment surveys for this company and nothing has changed, they think if they give you a rise of 21c an hour you'll keep quiet, don't be fooled, I would not recommend anyone to work here.

    Well known company.

Hire the right managers, embrace work/life balance more.

    Pros

Great discount and benefit scheme. Lots of opportunities for personal development and growth if your looking to delve into management.

    Cons

Only small amount of staff in stores. Need at least 1 or 2 more members of staff to allow for more effective operations, depending on size of the store.

I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

-25% discount whether the product is on sale/reduced and a hefty 50% at christmas
    - Training days are fun, you meet colleagues from other stores and learn together.
    - nationally recognised qualification in nutrition equiv. to a-levels after training has been completed.
    - 1% commision if all targets are met.

    Cons

-You are expected to be available at all times, it is desirable for most businesses but Holland and Barrett EXPECT you to cover when they need it and will spit dummies out if not.
-Cheap business, not willing to pay for store refits or even put CCTV in some stores, then complaining when stock shrinkage is ridiculously high.
    - Working times are never as advertised, its fair and well being supportive for the business but 3 to 5 hour shifts scattered all over the place is just appalling.
-Severely understaffed company, I read reviews before joining and never really understood until i joined.
    - You're made aware of the training they provide you with is to be done both inside and outside work, However there is NEVER time to do it in work as you're constantly interacting with every customer, serving, stock counting, date checking and other shop floor duties so essentially you only have your own free time to do it, and surprisingly you're still pressurised into completing it on time after all that.
    - Uniform standards are considerably old fashioned and the actual uniform they provide you with does not allow you to feel any sense of pride working for the company.

    Advice to Management

-Stop expecting all employees be clone-like and act and be the same, when body is different.
-Understand that just like you, your employees have a life outside of work.
-Pay staff for time spent doing their training or allocate certain times and days in the week if you're going to give them deadlines in ridiculously short periods of time and not just a bonus payout for getting 95% in the exam.
-DO NOT expect staff to be the security of your shops, we can be vigilant and be aware of thieves but during busy periods in your pathetically understaffed stores, thieves can be un-noticed, getting CCTV will help us to recognise and prevent thieves from returning.
    - BE AWARE that most of your survey cards are done by your employees and their friends because the targets you set for them is incredibly un-reachable, not a lot of customers have the time or even understand the questions on the survey whether you provided them with 100% customer service or not.

    Pros

Good fun at times and customer's can be very friendly and chatty.
Help's build customer service skills and people skills.

    Cons

    Contract Hours 8.25 hours
Not enough hours on the job to learn the ins and outs of products
Tests to do whilst on the job - not great if you're studying and only want a job to get you a few pound.
    Understaffed.
Not worth the money it pays

    Advice to Management

Improve training as not enough given to new recruits and improve hours and wages as job is not just sales you actually have to advise people on their ailments and what product to recommend them.
