I have been working at Holland & Barrett Retail for more than a year

    Pros

The only pro I can think of is the training that you receive. Although it can be hit and miss with some employees depending on what area you're working in and what role.

    Cons

Prepare to be bombarded by KPIs and targets, you need to sell this with this, increase on this, 4 item link sale, Rewards for Life cards, magazines, samples, customer feedback cards is just a few of the things you have to remember. There's always a shortage of staff so be prepared if you're management to not have a lot of time off if any. You're never acknowledged for the work that you do and the time that you put in or rewarded for it. The area manager is always on your back asking why something hasn't been done, why you haven't met a certain target etc. Just all in all very stressful along with all the tests and training updates that you have to do in between.

I worked at Holland & Barrett Retail full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

The customers. They’re a beautiful relief from the awful management

    Cons

Pay is terrible for what you have to do and learn. Many hours need to be spent at home in order to pass the tests that you have to do. If you’re good and know you’re stuff, you’re forced by the store managers to take the test on behalf of other staff members who can’t be bothered to learn or are too hungover to care. Sometimes you may even have to do the exams on behalf of your manager so that they pass!! God forbid you refuse or want to tell area / regional management, your life will be made hell. Bullying is horrendous. Area managers tend to favour people because they see them as friends. Many times Iv seen good people overlooked for promotions because their face just didn’t fit. No autonomy if you’re assistant manager. You’re just a puppet for your own manager and they expect you to do all the work whilst they sit in the office “doing admin”, aka sitting on the phone to other managers nattering away about what they done at the weekend and which team member they can’t stand and want to force out. Horrendous company.

    Cons

Higher management Area managers are crap, rude, and ignore everything you have to say. Lone trading No security what so ever Area managers argue about your safety and how it's okay to leave young females alone in a building late at night Take your money and hold it and refuse to give it back until threatened. To many pro Mo's Had missing pay every month and took weeks to track down. No fire alarm tests

I worked at Holland & Barrett Retail full-time for more than 8 years

    Pros

You can work with some good people at store level

    Cons

Everything else. Poor pay, bad upper management. Treat you like dirt, constant lies and broken promises. New owners and directors are even worse than the last lot. Pretend to care about their staff but cut hours to the bone to the point where your safety for staff is compromised Pretend to be an ethical company but when their bottom line is at risk they go back on their word. Ridiculous targets, obsession with reward cards to the point you actually resent customers who do not want one as you know your area managers will be screaming at you for not signing up enough people. The list is endless, you get to the point where you can’t face going into work

I worked at Holland & Barrett Retail full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Product training is very good, however you get minimal training for shop based and back office tasks but are expected to know how to do everything.

    Cons

You will have no work life balance. You will do many illegal shifts. I finished at 11:30pm and was back in for 4:30am. Threatened with disciplinary if you didn't do this. I worked 2 weeks without a day off, when I told my area manager this, she laughed and said, "do you want to work 2 more?" and that is "expected of you as a store manager." You get treated and spoken to with zero respect. Area manager made one member of staff go off sick with stress for a month, she broke me to the point where I was suicidal, she made 2 other members of staff walk on the spot. Do upper management care? No. 80% of the staff I originally started with have left within a 6 month period because of how you are treated by upper management. If you are a 10 hour contracted member of staff you will be expected to do full time hours with little or no warning. Don't think you will be asked. My area manager increased someone's contracted hours without even asking him. You will be expected to work your days off, to come in on your holidays, you won't get this time back and will be threatened with disciplinary if you don't do it.

I worked at Holland & Barrett Retail part-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    25% discount, 50% at Christmas.

    Cons

Awful lone working hours. Managers expect you to work crazy hours for little pay. Area Managers not helpful at all. No CCTV in some stores, no care for employee safety. Only thing they care about is getting money from customers.
