I worked at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Fellow employees generally good to work with. The facility I worked at typically operated on 5 days a week and shut down for the holidays, which made for a very easy work schedule compared to the larger paper companies (which operate 7 days a week and do not shut down during holidays). The locations of most of the manufacturing facilities and corporate offices are good geographically.

    Cons

Pay scales relative to other paper industry companies is very low. Bonus program for professional staff compared to other paper companies is also poor. The company culture is very narrow minded and controlled by those who "grew up with the company". Those who possess greater professional experience and a broader production/engineering background tend to be ignored .

Safety is a huge concern. At the facility I hired into, the Lock out/Tag out program was inadequate, with no system in place to audit procedures. Hourly employees had received no formal training in lock out/tag out, confined space, etc. Hourly employees did not have personal locks to use when working with locked out equipment. The PSM program was not properly managed at all. I would rate the overall safety culture at H&V as poor and in need of significant improvement.

    Advice to Management

Be more open minded and realize that doing things the "Holingsworth & Vose" way may not be the most efficient, nor the most economic way. There is much unrealized potential for improvement and growth that is hindered by management that is not very experienced and in some cases incompetent.

    Pros

There is none. Give up your life and devote it to hollingsworth and vose but receive the expendable asset treatment in return.

    Cons

Since its family owned, there us absolutely 0 attention paid to a standard operating procedure for newbies. You're on probation for 90 days with no explanation of your job. Can we say set up to fail? This is of course the walpole location. They want bodies and if yours breaks, you'll get canned and replaced. Peoples well being and workplace happiness has 0 importance as long as you keep the machines working and producing. You lost an arm? Oh well you're fired. You have the flu? Oh well you're fired as we dont care.

    Advice to Management

Your people and proper training are your biggest asset. Instead of worrying so much on production and keeping employees negative, water the garden and not the flower. Lots of favoritism and 0 structure. It's a mill but also a business and proper training and mentorship is imperative. Lots of angry disgruntled employees make the environment absolute poison. Also make sure your leaders are leaders and not just a boss. Putting someone in a supervisory role because theyre senior is asinine and it clearly shows.

I worked at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Starting pay, if you're used to pay around the Greenwich area.

    Cons

No diversity, no work/life balance, advanced based on time served instead of qualifications or merit, cliqueish atmosphere

    Advice to Management

Loosing a lot of talent & will end up closing up due to no workforce if you don't change. Money isn't everything anymore. Commit to EOE.

I have been working at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time

    Pros

    None unless you're higher level.

    Cons

You will go nowhere unless you are part of the associate program or in a directorship brought in as an outside hire.

    Advice to Management

Modernize, invest in a youthful work force, over half of your talent is due to retire in the next 2-8 years.

    Pros

    Good Benefits
    decent pay
    room for advancement
    under staffed

    Cons

At times, advancement is delayed due to thin work force.
New employees will at some point be put on Night shift and current employees already on night shift have a long wait to get daylight.

    Advice to Management

Keep bringing people in so that we are staffed in a way that allows employees to advance.

I worked at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Family owned / stable business plan
Global company, but small enough that you can play a bigger role
Many highly competent and friendly players
Management driven to see everyone benefit, will work hard to get team to 100% bonus if close

    Cons

There is an upper level management clique that is very resistant to adding new members
Distribution of manufacturing and technical people to many sites far apart impairs efforts
