I worked at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Family owned / stable business plan
Global company, but small enough that you can play a bigger role
Many highly competent and friendly players
Management driven to see everyone benefit, will work hard to get team to 100% bonus if close

    Cons

There is an upper level management clique that is very resistant to adding new members
Distribution of manufacturing and technical people to many sites far apart impairs efforts

    Pros

Great people to work with. Excellent benefits packages. Dynamic and very busy environment.

    Cons

Distance to major city. Commute was very long. Grilling right outside my office window stank the place up for days.

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing!

    Pros

Great people to work with. Everyone from HR to upper management was very friendly and interested even in the work of the interns. As a summer intern, I had the opportunity to present to the president and VP of manufacturing at the end of the summer. That was a pleasant surprise, given this is a multi-national company. Engineers and operators with many years of experience in paper production and manufacturing environments mean there is a wealth of available knowledge.

    Cons

Working at the Easton Mill, it can be loud and smelly in parts of the plant. I do not know what research or air quality measurement has been done, but there is a lot of movement of fiberglass materials in the plant and that could be a health concern. It seems that change in the manufacturing process can sometimes be slow to implement. Salary employees work very long hours.

    Advice to Management

Keep being accessible, approachable, and willing to listen to young engineers and interns. Try to be as flexible as possible to changing processes and making improvements.

I have been working at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent pay
    Ok benefits
    401K contribution

    Cons

Respiratory problems and lung disease is a serious threat working in areas of this organization. Many workers suffer from a chronic cough, deterioration of immune health, many have retired and shortly there after have died of lung cancer or Silicosis. Even into today's age, H&V doesn't do much for a cleaner environment, instead, they allegedly manipulate air quality data and lie that the glass dust and the melting plastic fumes are not a threat. Their final line of defense is handing out respirators to fulfill their duties to OSHA.

    Advice to Management

Acknowledge there is a severe health threat within the mills and rather spend the time and effort denying and work around, actually fix the bad air quality and health risks.

I worked at Hollingsworth And Vose full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Decent pay and good benefits.

    Cons

Where do we begin? Management does not have the necessary skill sets to manage and motivate people. They do not treat people equally. Numerous cliques throughout the company. Management genuinely does not care about their employees. Safety issues not addressed, just use a band-aid approach. Moral within the union is terrible.

    Advice to Management

Listen to people who KNOW how to run a mill. Hiring people with an Ivy League education does not guarantee success. Have an open mind. Change top management!

    Pros

    Good pay and benefits.
    Interesting industry.

    Cons

The restructured management created a redundant, micromanagement style where there are more people managing than contributing. The company that is still relatively small has a massive cooperation mentality. Way too much bureaucracy.

    Advice to Management

The company needs to trim the fat out of technology. Very few recognized contributors.
