    Pros

The people I worked with were nice and friendly and the management was effective, at least at our location. It was a relaxed environment.

    Cons

A major con was that there were no health insurance or benefits options for employees when I first began but they tried to rectify that, I suppose. Ultimately, this place just couldn't last because of Netflix.

    Advice to Management

What can I really say? The company failed. It folded. They should have tried to figure out some sort of cheaper rental options or developed a streaming service or something like that.

I worked at Hollywood Video part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Free company rentals for movies. That's literally all I can think of. Other than that the benefits are the exact same as any other entry level, part time job in a retail position. No benefits, no vacation time, minimum wage.

    Cons

Virtually no opportunity for promotion outside of your immediate superior quitting. Not enough labor at any given time creates too much of a work load for all employees. The company was losing business very quickly to services like Netflix, and eventually filed for bankruptcy. Because of that (before the bankruptcy) they continually placed MASSIVE sales demands on all their bottom level employees in an effort to stop themselves from going bankrupt.

    Advice to Management

Don't try to make your bottom level employees attempt to sustain the sinking ship of your business by compounding ever increasing sales demands on them.

    Pros

You got to play video games all day except when you had to help those pesky customers. New and interesting people come in all the time. Coworkers were awesome.

    Cons

Meth addicts would bring cans in to try and buy video games. Silly meth addicts. District managers were just the worst. They would come down and tell you to sell more crap customers didn't need, start a huge project to remodel the whole store and then leave in the middle of it leaving you to pick up the pieces of their mess.

    Advice to Management

What management? It was run by a bunch of kids trying to manage kids.

    Pros

Free rentals and availability before release dates. Flexible schedule. "Opportunities" for advancement supposedly. Nice customers. Some fellow hard workers were enjoyable to work with.

    Cons

Overlooked for promotions despite being a hard worker. Poor company moral. Under paid wages. Lazy and incompetent management. Little appreciation for valuable employees.

    Advice to Management

Care more about your hard working employees and promote based on merit.

    Pros

free movie rentals, flexible hours, getting to meet lots of new people, regular customers, renting movies the night before they are released,

    Cons

immature co-workers, hourly, no benefits, little room for growth, rude bosses, having to "babysit" your co-workers, general dislike of the job

    Advice to Management

find a way to track when the employees are giving movies away. I witnessed it and had to write people up often.

I worked at Hollywood Video full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

    -Flexible schedule
    -easy to move up
    -fun environment
-free rentals and access to movies before they were released
-employee discounts on games and accessories
-great employees with a drive to succeed
Everyday was a fun day on the job, because, as management, I made sure my team was pumped up enough to help customers and make sales. The people we would hire helped create a culture that spawned a district wide family. Everyone at the store levels knew each other and would consistently help each other out, and there was never animosity just a friendly camaraderie. I can't say I miss the friends I made there, because we still, mostly, keep in touch, but I do miss the culture we created.

    Cons

Everything else that has to do with the company, and it was a pain to deal with anything at the store level. I say it was a pain because they changed their minds on everything a daily basis, and it was hard to complete everything you had to do within time limits and no hours for man power. They made horrible decisions and wasted money on the simplest things like marketing signage that would sit in the back office for years never to be used. There is a reason why they went belly up, and the employees had no control over it. HR was a joke and had no real authority over the elitism in upper management positions. They found any reason to fire you if they didn't like you, and lie so you couldn't collect unemployment. The pay was lousy and for the amount of work you put in was not enough for what they asked of you, and towards the end they just didn't bother to pay certain people.
