    Former Employee - Anonymous Employee

    Pros

Free video rentals, flexible with school schedule

    Cons

Managers didn't do any work, high pressure on "MVP card" signups ($20 per year discount cards) with no pay off but potential to lose hours if numbers were low, infrequent and ineffective visits from district or regional managers.

    Advice to Management

    It's a bit moot now.

I worked at Hollywood Video part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Free movies, and games, cool customers and co-workers, at one point a great place to work

    Cons

I worked at Hollywood for five years. I joined when Vhs was still around. Due to the access of the Internet, this industry became cut throat. By the last year, we had a new store manager every month, sales were so low, we could only have one person per shift. Employees were stealing, customers were stealing. It was honestly a free for all and no one cared. I still miss working there from time to time. The pay was low. I was an assistant store manager making 7.90 while new hires were starting at 8.50 or even higher. Oh well.

    Advice to Management

You messed up. Way to go

    Pros

Get to talk about movies, video games. Not difficult, brainless work.

    Cons

I felt like the characters in Clerks the movie. Waiting around was okay.

I worked at Hollywood Video full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

I got out of there. On a serious note I got to work with some amazing people. There were (at the time) a lot of stores so when I moved to Boston, I could find a store.

    Cons

They closed, so I helped with the fire sale to get rid of everything, then the next store I was in closed. Each time another store closed I got a lateral promotion (promotion because I would get more hours, lateral because my pay and responsibilities would stay the same).

    Advice to Management

Trust that your employees want to make the store a better place. Treat employees well and give them the room to make the store better. and good job on getting rid of the purple shirts.
