I worked at Holyoke Community College as a contractor (More than 10 years)

    Pros

A great faculty in a caring school, with relatively modern facilities. Students are diverse in both culture and abilities. HCC creates a nice community for both students and faculty, with many extracurricular activities. Adjuncts are given opportunities to propose new courses and do research. There is a professional employees' union which vigorously works to support all of its faculty members.

    Cons

Like most colleges, HCC has close to 50% adjunct faculty, meaning most of the teaching assignments aren't much better than minimum wage. Adjuncts need to secure some other form of income for the summer months when they aren't paid. And while there is a good retirement system, there are no health insurance benefits for adjuncts.

I worked at Holyoke Community College part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Excellent coworkers that are helpful and friendly. A great neighboring community. Western Mass. is a beautiful landscape. The students are hard working and care about their education.

    Cons

Full time positions are rare and competitive. Holyoke, MA is kind of a smelly place. Live in Northampton. Do not ride your bike to work.

    Advice to Management

Let your employees go to lunch more often. People get hungry and get low blood sugar. Sometimes the bus is late and everyone has to hot dog it over to the ferry. Unfortunate.

I have been working at Holyoke Community College as a contractor

    Pros

The administration, faculty, and staff are dedicated to serving the needs of the diverse student body. Students are supported and challenged through encouragement and respectful engagement. It is a dynamic learning environment that defines a community college.

    Cons

The nature of a community college results in a lack of a cohesive student body. The student population is fractured into day, twilight, evening and online schedules. The upside, is open access and the downside is lack of student integration.

    Advice to Management

Find ways for administration, faculty, and staff to better integrate those students that are not day students within the college community.

    Nice campus and location

    Cons

Sometimes made to feel like you're not trusted--some supervisors are highly suspicious.

    Advice to Management

Continue to monitor your employees, just not so closely. No one likes to feel like their supervisors don't trust them.
