    Pros

    Staff Discount - a whopping 10%, 20% at Homebase.
    Share Save Scheme
    Free Drinks
    Free car parking
    On site canteen
    Discounted products with Unilever

    Cons

    The staff are expected to give their lives to the company. The flexible working rota is all one-sided to suit the company, then you get an e-mail telling you that if you don't like it there are plenty more people who would be happy to take your place!

    You progress by who you know, not what you know. The team leaders are mostly bone-idle and couldn't do a customer service advisers job if their life depended on it. The management are bullies from the call centre manager down.

    The work is stressful, repetitive and monotonous, you are managed and watched constantly, you are open to abuse from customers and no support from the team leaders. The whole set up is unprofessional and the targets are unrealistic. You are treated like children, the pay is abysmal, and the staff are dispensable.

    Morale is constantly low, the average age of the team leaders is about 24, and their professionalism (or lack of it) is questionable to say the least.

    Advice to Management

    Move the CSLs around a bit. Stop the cliquey, gossiping, giggling culture and employ team leaders and managers who can set an example and treat the staff like human beings.

    Pros

    Great people, welcoming industry. Great to work for a recognised set of brands and to enjoy discounts as well as an understanding of how Retail is developing.

    Cons

    Very political, perhaps especially since takeover by Sainsburys. IT strategy needs to focus on rationalisation as well as enhancing digital growth. Sometimes developing IT solutions in house is not the only way forward.

    Advice to Management

    Communicate openly to employees when change is expected.

    Pros

    Pretty much guaranteed to be kept on. Team leaders were nice and down to earth. Trainers were great.

    Cons

    Too much management responsibility given to staff at lower grades. If you want a minute to yourself, don't work here, it is extremely busy and there is no let up in the volume of work you're expected to get through.

    Advice to Management

    Take on more of the team leader work that is currently given to team members. Separate phones from admin work - it is more effective in the long run.

    Close to home
    Systems are good
    Relaxed culture

    Cons

    Management doesn't review employee performance well
    Shifts are incredibly chaotic

    Organize shifts better and review performance more closely if you want to keep advisors.

    opportunities for promotion, wage not based on age, often opportunities for overtime but not too pushy

    Cons

    management can be mixed quality depending on team, upper management anonymous and elusive, can feel unrewarding long term

    co-manage - make sure all line managers agree on management style

    Pros

    Good location, though parking is an issue, good staff sale, benefits are generally ok, but unlikely to attract someone (and the salaries alone won't do that either). Some great people there and a good brand to have on your CV.

    Cons

    In parts of the business, if you're not engaging socially with people, your face won't fit. Some teams are very cold and unwelcoming, even on the same floor.

    Advice to Management

    Invest in your staff. There has been huge investment in the customer, but colleagues can be left wanting.

    Pros

    The future (relationship following the Sainsburys takeover) should hold substantial opportunity and growth. There are vacancies at present, not sure if this is a good or bad thing

    Cons

    Stronger Management required to deliver. It's clear that employees appear to be scared of change, constantly worrying that their "job is on the line"

    Be bold, take the opportunity to prove to Sainsburys that Home Retail Group have a strong and dedicated team - remove the fear......

    Pros

    wage isn't based on minimum wage (age not taken into account), fair discount (10% off argos, formerly 20% off homebase and 30% off habitat), was offered the opportunity for promotion within several months

    Cons

    booking holidays was difficult and hours were not particularly flexible
