I worked at Homeland Stores full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

    Flexible schedule
Fun environment most of the time

    Cons

    Poor management
    No real direction
    No future

    Advice to Management

Stop trying to grow and focus on what you have. This advice is probably way too late as it has already moved past the point of saving.

    Pros

The staff are very friendly and treat you like family. Full benefits, employee owned. Sometimes management will be flexible with your schedule on a last minute need.

    Cons

The workload is increasing and job description varies by each stores needs. Available time to take vacations is limited and restricted. Assistants and store managers can not take vacation during five major holidays. And in some stores, they are not able to take the first two weeks off either. Long hours and no additional compensation. Pros and cons vary by store and store management.

    Negative Outlook

    Pros

Health insurance, decent pay, somewhat flexible hours, room for creativity in some departments (e.x. cut fruit, floral, bakery)

    Cons

--At some stores, there is a culture where everyone is trying to push blame onto someone else instead of taking responsibility for themselves. Most issues vary from store to store and they mostly depend on who you're working with.

--Not a lot of upward mobility or interaction between stores and corporate. This means that once you reach a certain management level in your field/department, there's not much upward mobility and you might be stuck in that position indefinitely. It gets pretty depressing.

    Advice to Management

Mostly for upper management: please allot money to your stores for regular maintenance. There are broken drains and freezer doors, and tiles that need to be replaced. I've heard that deli is constantly violating health codes because their equipment isn't maintained. Please ensure that your equipment is properly serviced.

Also, some of your marketing strategies are just... really weird. Upper management (corporate) constantly sends items that customers aren't interested in. It really messes up the sales goals for departments.

I worked at Homeland Stores full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

It's easy entry level work almost anywhere within the store. It's a union job. Life insurance, health and dental after a year. But it wasn't real good insurance.

    Cons

My personal experience wasn't bad starting out. Then I was changed to only nights and had to close every night, weekend and holiday. The pay isn't very good and it takes years to get that increased. Vacation only comes after 18 months not the normal 12 months that most companies offer. No sick days or PTO maybe until a couple years in. I had to be a grocery clerk many times when we were busy and short handed.

    Advice to Management

Don't go short staffed to save an extra 7.25 per night. Keep clerks on an extra hour to cover rush times. Start out at slightly higher pay scale to retain better employees and reduce turnover cost.

I worked at Homeland Stores full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Job security, you can lie, cheat and steal and only get demoted. However, if you stand up for yourself they'll let you go in a heart beat.

    Cons

    Incompetent District Management
    Dated business model
    Lack of Employee appreciation

    Advice to Management

Once you are salary, you do not matter unless you make friends with the right corporate employees or district manager.
