I worked at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Honigman has a great benefits package, flex time, and support for secretaries if they need help getting work done either with a floater to help out or the WP department.

    Cons

You work for attorneys. As with law firms of a similar size - they want to make their attorneys happy and don't really care about support staff.

    Advice to Management

Take care of your support staff. I know you think they are a dime a dozen - but continuity really is helpful to a business.

I worked at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Benefits were on par with others.

    Cons

Dismal culture. Depends on "who" you are. Senior leadership does not communicate but when something goes wrong - are the first to blame others. Serious micromanagement. Objectives change daily. No leadership that sets examples for others - very, very top down management style but again no communication. Everything is antiquated here. Exclusive culture. Best decision to leave this horrid environment. A lot of turnover.

    Advice to Management

Get new senior leadership who know how to run a business

I have been working at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn (More than 8 years)

    Pros

    Ok pay and good benefits.

    Cons

Bad Management. No room to Advance. Firm don't help with staff parking. Plus only reimburse $100 of it for staff. The spend money on nothing. Everything is old and out dated.

    Advice to Management

Learn to treat you staff better and stop being so cheap for a law firm that make tons of money.

I have been working at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Honigman pays on the upper end and gives 4-6 weeks off paid a year to full-time staff.

    Cons

The staff is treated like 2nd rate citizens. The attorneys are the upper echelon in this culture and they can treat staff however they want without any correction from the management. This creates a very hostile work environment. For the most part, Honigman attorneys are not happy people and make pretty miserable bosses. The staff, in turn, start to turn on each other because of these conditions.

    Advice to Management

Train your attorneys how to treat your staff. This is greatly needed.

I worked at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

As like many other summer associate programs, they treat you very well. Never paid for a single lunch and was taken out to many dinners and events. Really nice people, especially the hiring manager, Abby Stover.

    Cons

The only bad thing was that some of the assignments were pretty boring and mind-numbing. But if you found a good assignment from a partner, it could be very interesting

    Advice to Management

Just make sure that the assignments stay interesting and they aren't just busy work. Keep looking for interesting and new things to do when it comes to events for summers

    Pros

    Good pay and good benefits

    Cons

Rude attorneys and the staff is even worse.

    Advice to Management

It isn't worth giving advice because they won't listen.

I have been working at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Regular salary increases; open review process; good benefits; good reputation in the legal community.

    Cons

Billable hour requirements higher than competitors. High billing rates make business development difficult, especially for junior attorneys and those in satellite offices.

    Pros

Nice salary, good benefits. Respect for committed and knowledgeable employees.

    Cons

Staff can be very rude unless you have a close personal relationship with them. When people call asking for help, "being nice" is the last thing in their minds.

    Advice to Management

Encourage employees to have respect for everyone and promote a culture of collegiality.

    "Legal Secretary"

    • Senior Management
Former Employee - Legal Secretary in Bloomfield Hills, MI
Former Employee - Legal Secretary in Bloomfield Hills, MI

    Pros

Honigman offers a very competitive salary and benefits package. If you can get a few years in, the experience (for resume purposes) cannot be beat because of the status and size of this firm.

    Cons

Staff is often reminded that they are inferior to the attorneys that work there and verbal abuse and disrespectful or inconsiderate behavior by attorneys is not only tolerated, it is often ignored. Different policies apply to staff and attorneys, some of which cement the undervalued position of the staff.

    Advice to Management

Be more aware of your staffs' value to your firm and their needs as people. You should be an advocate for all of your employees, not just attorneys. Sure, everyone should be grateful to have a job, but that doesn't mean they should have to tolerate unfair and unsettling working conditions when there are simple and rational solutions to their problems.
