    Pros

If you want to learn, if you really want to learn the field, and not just do the status quo, you get the opportunity to get diverse clients and work on diverse areas of the audit. If you want to get a particular type of client or want a particular type of exposure, you just ask and they will try to accommodate you.
Family oriented. This is a good firm if you are a parent.

    Cons

    None at the moment.

    Advice to Management

Provide a more structured training and evaluation System for entry level staff

I have been working at Hood & Strong full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Overtime on top of salary and typically work 40-50 hours a week; 55 during busy season. Overtime gets paid every hour over 40 hours for a week. Profit Sharing every year.

    Cons

Most People are great to work with, others you will have to adjust your approach. You can't make everyone happy but you have to try.

    Advice to Management

More Training. Specifically what to expect during engagements. I didn't know what to expect until I was actually on my first audit. It is 24/7 on the job training which can be frustrating at times but there a lot of great people willing to teach and help when you are stuck with something.

I worked at Hood & Strong full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Lots of good training, support for taking CPA exams, large and interesting clients, pretty diverse employee pool, lots of women in management, lots of opportunity to learn new things and take responsibility for projects. I learned a lot about the industry and how life in public accounting works at this firm, both the good and the bad. I used to appreciate the benefits less than I do now that I work at another firm - they really weren't so bad. Had some fun chats with partners at firm parties.

    Cons

Like any public accounting firm, they will take as much advantage of you as you allow them to. I had a couple bad experiences with specific people in management, but with a little distance, I can see that they were just being old school public accounting, and I was taking it too personally. It's never going to be an informal environment. As a lower level person, it's probably better to just check your personality at the door. Again, this is not specific to H&S, it's just how traditional public accounting is. Just like how two of the partners I saw on a daily basis refused to acknowledge my existence for the first year that I worked there, even though I said hello every day. Things worked out with them in the long run, but there is some funky formality that was a little hard to navigate as a newer staff.

    Advice to Management

I think management is aware of the issues that people have, but they are playing a long game, so they are selective about which problems they proactively work to fix and which they let shake out in the wash. I guess my advice for management is to make sure to follow through on what you tell employees you'll do.

    Pros

The Partners and Directors are legitimately concerned about the professional development of their employees and they treat you with respect.

    Cons

    # of hours worked during busy season can vary depending on which engagements you are put on. But this pretty standard in Audit.

    Advice to Management

Keep up what you are doing. I really enjoyed my time at H&S.

I worked at Hood & Strong full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great clients, nice people, great benefits, partners know you and want you to do well.

    Cons

It's public accounting so sometimes you are working longer hours during busy season but compared to most larger firms it's not too bad.

    Advice to Management

    Keep mentoring staff
