I worked at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The pay, especially for a college graduate is pretty good. They reimburse tuition

    Cons

Toxic levels of stress due to quotas. Heart attacks and strokes and plain old burn-out are common among workers. They levy a $1000.00 a year fine if you don't go to a " voluntary" company provided health assessment where they ask MANY invasive questions no employer should ask. Middle management is cliquish with many people only getting promoted due to their ability to suck up. You will have someone with a GED and no knowledge of the actual job supervising people with master's degrees and multiple years of industry experience.

    Advice to Management

Change the company culture so people are hired and promoted on merit not on whether someone likes them. Embrace innovation. Increase diversity. Make uniform educational requirements for mid level managers

I have been working at Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey (More than 10 years)

    Pros

I don't know as I have not been given the opportunity to speak to anyone about my skill set.

    Cons

While I have worked alongside many Account Managers at HBCBS of NJ and definitely feel I can do the job, I cannot even get an interview., Horizon has changed their requirements to insisting that this level employee have a Bachelors degree (although many that have been there a long time do no), my resume is ALWAYS rejected and they have the same two positions open for more than 6 months. Thirty years experience doing the same job at a different company is no longer sufficient. I do not understand.

    Advice to Management

Change requirement from must have a Bachelors Degree to must have either Bachelors Degree or a minimum of 15 years experience in Account Management in Health & Life or something similar. You are missing out on excellent candidates.

    Pros

Terrific work/life balance. Great salary and benefits.

    Cons

Open floor plan makes it difficult to conduct business/meetings on the telephone due to too much noise in surrounding area. Huddle/conference rooms were usually taken.
