I have been working at Horizon House full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

The staff members are passionate. The CEO invests in the development of his staff. The agency shows appreciate for staff members through a variety of gestures.

    Cons

The agency is very top-heavy, it also very credential centric (titles matter to certain groups), and work groups can be very disconnected.

    Advice to Management

There are too many managers who don't manage people. There is a lot of wasted time, talent, and resource because of lack of cultural shifts and adaptation to change.

    Pros

I cannot think of any reason to work here. I spent almost a year trying to find a reason to stay and make a difference. When I left I felt like a prison sentence had ended.

    Cons

The leadership is stuck in a 80's 90's mentality of doing business in the non-profit sector. Change and new ideas are not welcome despite being solicited. The support departments, Payroll, HR, Benefits, etc have no regard for employees and are generally rude. There is a constant tension in the air cause by fear of management with a punishment mentality. This place is toxic.

    Advice to Management

Maybe if you treated your employees with a modicum of respect, you would hold on to talented bright people rather than the mediocre and lowest common denominator.

I have been working at Horizon House full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Paid holidays, use of company vehicles, convenient location, direct care staff are supportive of each other and are genuinely invested our clients success.

    Cons

Privileged, sheltered administrators show no respect for employees who must work in hostile, dangerous conditions on a daily basis in order to deliver services to clients. Resembles a plantation in terms of top level management vs. direct care providers. Low wages and no opportunity for advancement unless you have a "personal" relationship with an administrator.

    Advice to Management

Reconnect to the values expressed in your mission statement and realize that your subordinates are not sub-humans.

I worked at Horizon House full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Many disabled people depend on the services. Many hard working and good employees.

    Cons

Poor executive leadership. The CEO advises employees to go to him as a final resort for solution, but don't expect much from him if he would have to go out of his way to do the right thing for you. Power corrupts and I don't trust CEOs in non-profit organizations who stay in the CEO office for decades. Horizon House needs a new CEO from outside the agency with more integrity that Jeff. Don't get me wrong, Jeff has done a lot for the organization in the past 25 years, but it is time for him to leave.

    Advice to Management

Please allow change in the executive leadership, at least every 10 years. These executives have been in Horizon House since the early 1990s!!!!! Time for a major change.

Great first job for a recent college grad,
    pay was okay 16.50/hr

    Cons

STRESSFUL. All about getting billable units. Could barely use the restroom without being hassled about units.

    Advice to Management

Take it easy on the staff. Quality is better than quantity
