    Pros

Good flexibility. Summer hours, nice to get out a little early on Friday's. Care about the employee. Competitive benefits package. Promote from within.

    Cons

At times hard to be promoted. You must have a four year degree to get into a salaried position.

    Advice to Management

Continue to allow your employees some flexibility with their time. It helps to not feel trapped in their current positions.

    Pros

Wonderful Pay. This company has great benefits for it's employees. While there are high expectations for work performance, one feels accomplished at the end of the day for all the hard work he/she put in.

    Cons

Sales Assistant can't advance in this company.

    Advice to Management

    Management is great

I have been working at Hormel full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

The company is here to stay. They have a solid core, and keep growing and innovating. The pay is good enough to keep you around, in most cases. There are many opportunities if you are willing to make the commitment.

    Cons

Although there have been efforts to improve work life balance by adding vacation, sick days, and accommodating some flexible work situations, the Hormel culture still doesn't permit anything less than 10+ hour days.
Working conditions in the plant are grueling, confrontational, uncomfortable, and generally unpleasant for management and union employees alike. Corporate working conditions are better.
The biggest con is that the corporate office and flagship plant are in Austin MN. It is a small town with very few options for shopping, art, food, and entertainment. There is a lot of effort going into improving the town, but there is only so much that can be accomplished, and it will take time.

    Advice to Management

Hormel is on the right track, keep doing what you're doing! Keep working on the work-life balance issues, but not too quickly. There is a huge opportunity to leverage sales across all brands and divisions, but the communication isn't there yet.

    Pros

Great Training, great management. Very smart company, always innovating. Attainable goals.

Corporate office location. If you don't say yes to a promotion, you may not get another shot. Typical HR nazi's.

    Pros

Excellent benefits with a very conservative company. Lots of responsibility right out of college.

    Cons

For a technical person the attitude is still that of an old meat cutting plant.

I have been working at Hormel full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Better pay than Seaboard, Smith-field, Farmland, Swift (JBS), or Tyson.
Much less stress than average packing house jobs ...

    Cons

Unless you have a frat brother, uncle, or god-parent as a VP, or are a minority, you will find promotions VERY slow ...and unless you really understand being on your feet 8 to 10 hours a day working in cold cold environments six to seven days a week ..you might be in for a shock ..

    Advice to Management

Take the patronage out of the internal job bid system, and make it a level playing field, stop hiding choice jobs for favorite employees.
Quit trying to bring in young college kids who are completely over whelmed by working 10 plus hours days 6 and 7 days a week, and poach more employees from other companies.

    Pros

Good pay. Mostly good people to learn from. Give you lots of responsibility and tasks to complete. What you do is value added for the company in most cases. Learn a lot about yourself as a manager and how well you will do in this type of field.

    Cons
