I have been working at Horry County Schools full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

If you live here and need a consistent job, it's still better than many options in the area.

    Cons

All of the complete nonsense expected of teachers, as well as the completely inadequate pay. It's very difficult to teach without any other job and raise a family.

I have been working at Horry County Schools full-time

    Pros

The employees of Horry County (particularly Seaside Elementary) are great to work with. Being a recent college graduate, my co-workers have been exceptionally helpful in assisting my learning as an educator.

    Cons

Accommodations for working over-time are not the most flexible...

    Advice to Management

When employees speak out about problems or concerns, listen to them.

I worked at Horry County Schools full-time for more than 2 years

    Pros

At my school, my coworkers were amazing. They are all just as stressed yet willing to help you when needed. Some children are sweet, excited to learn and love school.

    Cons

Administration is blind to teachers struggles, never hold students accountable and make poor decisions that make teaching nearly impossible. Pay is terrible. Expectations are completely unrealistic. You can never get any work done during work hours, forcing you to work on your own time. HCS will never pay you for extra hours, required events or required certifications. You are on your own. Student behavior gets worse...

    Advice to Management

Listen to your teachers when they say they are tired and burnt out. HCS is only making is worse for themselves, as teachers are quitting left and right.

I have been working at Horry County Schools full-time for more than 4 years

    Pros

Location is nice and students are, in General, reasonably well behaved. Facilities are above average.

    Cons

Unacceptable and unrealistic expectations on teachers to be available during school day for meetings and advisory periods. Quality of instruction is suffering significantly.

I worked at Horry County Schools part-time

    Pros

The kids who were raised to be respectful and kind.

    Cons

Students run the school and parents are catered to. If you are not a teacher or administrator you have no value.

    Advice to Management

Listen to employees and hire directors for your programs who are not completely clueless and can communicate how uncomfortable certain students make the work environment. A director who is not afraid to stand up for employees and kick out kids who only attend to cause trouble. Somebody who will not let students into a program who have a conflict with other students already in the program to get away from the students...

I have been working at Horry County Schools full-time for more than 6 years

    Pros

Pay is on par with area districts.

    Cons

Don't expect any voice in instructional material or methods. Keep a good neck race for the regular complete shifts in curriculum, standards, and classroom practices mandated by the district.

    Advice to Management

Give your teachers a voice; encorporate them into the decision making process. They're on the front lines and have the best perspective of what works and what doesn't.
