I worked at Hospice of the Chesapeake (More than 3 years)

    Pros

There is a strong focus on the mission and sustaining the level of support it provides to the community. Everyone cares about the work they do. I had a great team who were professional and fun to work with. Also, the RN Case Managers are an extraordinary group of people who are passionate about their patient care. There is a lot of growth opportunity on the clinical side.

    Cons

It can be hard to move foward in the changing healthcare environment, but that is currently found anywhere in healthcare. Worklife/Balance is something they have worked on a lot in the last year.

    Advice to Management

Although turnover here is below industry average, perception can be everything.

I have been working at Hospice of the Chesapeake full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Great mission, great leadership, great camraderie, and surprisingly good benefits. I think a lot of people would be surprised at how much joy and laughter there is around here.

    Cons

The pay is about what you'd expect for a nonprofit. But then there's all that good karma. It's hard to put a value on that!

    Advice to Management

    Keep doing what you're doing.

I have been working at Hospice of the Chesapeake full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Hospice of the Chesapeake is a nonprofit that is careful steward of the funds it raises. They have a strong plan for moving forward to become a leader in the field of hospice and palliative care. Its grief programs are top notch, with dedicated professionals who are constantly seeking to improve and educate. They offer many professional development programs both internally and for the public and other professionals. Technology and facilities are kept current. Volunteers, an integral part of the mission of any hospice, are thoroughly trained and encouraged to participate in numerous free training that staff also can take part in. Vacation time is very generous and leadership is thoughtful and understanding. Quarterly meetings, called Town Halls, keep the staff well informed of the leadership's plans and how employees fit in.

    Cons

The nature of the business means there is a disconnect between different departments. Health benefits favor single individuals -- family plans are very expensive.

    Pros

Working in the field, the people you meet in the homes (the patients and caregivers and families) are great mostly. Again, if you're in the field, the other people you work with out in the field are also almost always great, personality-wise.

    Cons

Unfortunately, not all the nurses are properly trained properly to help the dying so the sad part of this job is watching people die in pain and not being able to help them. You would think you could call the management in at times like that but the management is the worse thing of all about this job. I think you can see this by reading the other reviews. They are unresponsive to the needs of the fields. They do play favorites. If they don't like you, they will fire you in the most humiliating way. That happened to several of the people I worked with there - people who had worked there 20 years. They wiped out the experienced and wise chaplain department and left the chaplains that lack heart. They abuse the nurses and ask them to do more than is humanly possible, so they are overworked. They cut out all the grief workshops for the employees, so they are left dealing with their grief on their own. Everyone else in the world admires these workers- the nurses, social workers, aides and chaplains who are on the battle lines helping people die and the management honestly treats them with suspicion, disregard and as though they bring no value. Want this kind of abuse? This is the place to work! Hope you're a Mother Theresa.

    Advice to Management

Go work somewhere else and make hospice great again.

    Pros

The pay if you can stomach everything else.

    Cons

Managers are unprofessional and don't know HIPAA. Human Resources is unprofessional. They don't help you learn how to do your job. Forms clicks with some staff and treat others poorly.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing. They're doomed.
