I worked at Hot Topic part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

    Fun environment.
    Great culture and people
    You can make great friends.

    Cons

Each store decides who to hire or fire.
    Very biased managers.
Hours based on credit card sales, even if you don't work register.
It's fun at first but management treats keyholders unfairly. They are given a higher title and some of the responsibilities, such as the paperwork aspects, but not the compensation for it.

    Pros

Wanted to look up on corporate but does anyone know if an employee can get fired for not signing up enough customers on loyalty card? Thanks

    Cons

Low pay, long hours, shortened breaks, no room to move and store always hot.

    Advice to Management

Shouldn't lose your job for not getting customers to sign up for loyalty cards. Cant force a customer so how is that employee fault?

I have been working at Hot Topic part-time

    Pros

Some People you work with are really nice, awesome, Know their stuff about Disney or comic characters and are friendly. You get breaks that are paid for, 40% discount on store merch and 20% only on band Albums.

    Cons

Hours are not fully guaranteed, Hours are always cut, Or you wont work a full week even when you updated availability. Very Unorganized in the stock room. Watch your step. Back room is a mess. Employees frequently ask for shift covers. Most hours go to key holders, managers, and assistant managers.

    Advice to Management

Plan work schedules 2 weeks in advance, you really need to stop cutting hours to those who work once a week and even it out with some one who works 5 days a week. You pick and choose favorites and give them more hours. Don't Promise hours you know you cannot afford.

Management is a mess, poor pay, and the credit card policy is a joke.

I worked at Hot Topic part-time (More than a year)

    Pros

This is the perfect job for a high schooler or college kid that basically has no previous work experience. I worked about 15 hours per week, mostly nights and weekends. They are really good about scheduling around school or other jobs

    Cons

Starts at minimum wage and you barely get any raises. I had to close every single Saturday. The way they train you to sell makes you annoy basically every single customer that walks in the door. You only get yelled at for the things you do wrong, but never get praised for positive things.

    Advice to Management

    Give some positive feedback

I worked at Hot Topic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Good benefits, relaxed dress code, meet interesting people, good discount

    Cons

Low pay, bad upper management, went through multiple DMs, favoritism used by every level of management, very strict fraternization policy, expect so much for so little, pick and choose what policy's to follow when it's convenient for them

    Advice to Management

Choose better candidates for your over store level management. Listen to lower level managers and associates and try to figure out why they're so frustrated. Investigate things they claim, usually they see more than you from within the store. I've seen a lot of shady happenings. Way too many reports go ignored and too many wrong people punished.

    Pros

Cool environment, no real dress code, loved working with the customers

    Cons

TERRIBLE management, I worked briefly during Black Friday as a temp (prospectively to become part-time) while I was at the greeting station other part-time employees (who weren't temps like me) were literally playing there Nintendo DS doing absolutely nothing. Also on Black Friday I worked which was super crazy obviously but I really enjoyed it, then came closing in which we were cleaning up. There were about 3 other temps all kind of gothic and emoish who were literally just standing around and talking while I was doing all the work! But the moment I sat down I got scolded when you get were literally doing nothing but standing in a circle and talking. Total bs. In all honestly I think that only had intentions as hiring me for those few days, all of the people they did hire were white emo kids so.

    Advice to Management

Don't treat your temps like sh$t. Stop discriminating.

    Advice to Management

if you are not content with languishing in the same position and being judged unfairly, look elsewhere
