I have been working at Hot Topic (More than a year)

    Pros

The culture is great people are friendly, you are encouraged to be yourself and it is a judgement free zone.
most employees are adults meaning they don’t have have to be chased around to do their work and as result management is not constantly on your back.
you work freely along as you do what is needed of you, this is undoubtedly one of the best place to work and a place like this will not come by very often.

    Cons

because it is located between two industrial railways, going somewhere during your lunch break may take longer than expected from time to time due to traffic caused by passing trains

    Advice to Management

management is doing a good job so far, i just thing they should continue on this path, although there is always room to improve so far i would say they are doing a great job

I have been working at Hot Topic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Working hot topic retail is amazing. The teams are super friendly, people get a long pretty well. you can dress however you want, and this often can give you the opportunity to explore with how you look.

    Cons

It's a little competitive to get hours. Some employees might try to crush your sales numbers so you get less hours, but if you can great people quickly, organize quickly, sell items, and catch people stealing, then you can easily get full time hours. it just might be hard to master all those things perfectly. you have to multi task a lot.

    Advice to Management

maybe hire smaller teams so sales associates can get more full time hours.

    Cons

Low wages and it gets really hot.

I have been working at Hot Topic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Great discount 40% stacks on sale items and promos.
Fun place to work at, co workers are lit. Customers are mostly nice blah blah.

    Cons

Hours will vary on your availability and whether or not management likes you. Also, payroll tends to be low so if your shifts are late into the week then they may get cut. I've been working there for 1.5 years and ive seen three store managers come and go, and countless part time managers quit on the spot. Something must be going on if that's a common thing. Pay obviously doesn't match with amount of work expected out of you.

    Advice to Management

    Stop quitting lol

I worked at Hot Topic part-time

    Pros

There was no formal work attire.

    Cons

It was a toxic environment. Very little respect was shared between co-workers. Within the eight months I worked there, I was under at least 9 different managers because people kept quitting.

    Advice to Management

The closing requirements are ridiculous. 2 of the managers I closed with would be forced to clock out and keep working because they physically couldn't complete all of the closing tasks in the allotted time. Also, take a look at the store in the Northwoods mall and see how it is run. If it continues to be managed like it is, it will most certainly shut down soon.

I have been working at Hot Topic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Fabulous facility, temperature controlled, huge lunchroom, gym, showers, great offices, security guards are really nice.

    Cons

Not impressed with floor management at all. Terse, somewhat threatening with job status, explained nothing. Not a way to influence new hire. Training was mediocre at best, given the somewhat complex system.

    Advice to Management

Looks like you need to retain good employees, not scare them off. 15 minutes in, 2 trainees from the day before had quit. Where is the respect portion of the culture?

I have been working at Hot Topic full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Loved the customers and the co workers. Loved the environment and the benefits. Stood behind policy and took pride in my job.

    Cons

If you don't get hot topic credit card sign ups they force you out. It's all based on silly made up numbers. Yes made up numbers! Example... my "loyalty percentage" is based on how many "nos" you get in a week compared to everyone else and how many hours you work... not based on actual number of transactions. They no longer look at you as a person. Such a shame, I loved this company so much up until the buy out a couple years ago. The neglect is company wide.

    Advice to Management

Listen to your employees! Go back to the classic caring company.

I worked at Hot Topic part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

You can wear whatever you want, and express yourself physically with crazy hair and piercings. Music is always on and loud, upbeat environment.

    Cons

Very corporate now...no control over what music is playing, lots of shipment coming in daily with little room to re merchandise, seems more corny and driven towards pre teens than what it was back in the day, centered around music..A lot of pressure to catch shoplifters.

    Advice to Management

Speak up for your stores against HQ, distribute hours fairly or ask for more. Needs to be more communication from the front line to the mother ship...
