I have been working at Hot Topic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Employee Discount 40% off combinable with promotions
Discounts offered at Torrid and BoxedLunch
    Full Time benefits
    Monthly Sales bonuses

    Cons

Lack of consistency in upper management (outside of store level)
    Inconsistent pay among positions
Benefits might as well not exist (i.e. they cover one eye appointment a year, but no coverage on glasses themselves?)

I have been working at Hot Topic part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great discount, ability to be yourself at work, and great customers that can become long lasting friends.

    Cons

poor management from the higher ups in the company, poor company policies, terrible wages, very hard to move up within the company outside of store management.

    Advice to Management

more like advice to company higher ups: listen to what your staffs in store have to say dont just judge based what district managers say. Offer mental health benefits, and make it so employees working in stores can move up to become district, regional, and HQ workers

I worked at Hot Topic full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

Casual dress code, interesting atmosphere, good music, nice customers.

    Cons

Unrealistic sales goals, trying to push credit cards on children, having to call customers to ask them to come spend Hot Cash, very uninvolved upper management (Regional Managers), and in my area, very unprofessional upper management (District Manager).

    Advice to Management

Regional Managers and higher should really start paying attention to how District Managers are treating and speaking to their Store Managers.

I have been working at Hot Topic part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Open dress code, listen to any kind of music, flexible shifts, this is a great option for a second job.

    Cons

The pay is low and you only get a good amount of hours to actually pay bills if you are upper level management.

    Advice to Management

Look for those that want to advance

I worked at Hot Topic full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Company culture was great when I started and still can be depending on your RD. It's terrible in the SE US. Having a relaxed dress code is nice at times. PTO and benefits are pretty great compared to others in the industry.

    Cons

Absolutely no payroll for anything, ever. Incredibly high selling behavior expectations but only one person coverage for most of the day except on weekends. Mandatory "theme days" that generally require purchasing clothing or accessories to fit the theme, whether or not you care about it. Constantly having your job held over your head regardless of how well you're performing. Watching people be fired left and right for minor infractions while store managers who have assaulted their employees remain employed.

    Advice to Management

For the love of god, give stores some payroll back or quit expecting so much out of them. Pick your battles better to reduce turnover. Don't base new company goals off of studies done in 1999-2002.

I worked at Hot Topic full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great work life balance, easy to bonus, a lot of contests with cash incentives, casual yet professional, and very caring staff.

    Cons

Very low payroll hours, not enough time to complete projects/managerial paperwork, too many promos going on, overall trying to do too much in too short of a time frame.

    Advice to Management

Stop switching up the promos and visuals every other day and except us to do everything else we normally do. The expectations of the staff sometimes can be ridiculous, especially for stores with low payroll hours.

I have been working at Hot Topic full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Team members rally together to get done what needs to be done. Stimulates problem solving and strategizing behaviors. KPIs hold everyone to same standards.

    Cons

Poor ability to plan. Information stagnation. Outdated computers. HQ customer service is challenging for stores to partner with. Space and presentation suffer.

    Advice to Management

Sharpen prioritization of directives. Overwhelmed teams produce less of what matters when spread too thin.

I worked at Hot Topic full-time (More than 8 years)

    Pros

Good job if you are into pop culture.

    Cons

Understaffed, poor benefits, constant hounding to get results.

    Advice to Management

The training program needs to be reworked. 3.5 hour shifts for SAs is difficult. Running a store on 105 hours a week is difficult. No one can be trained/coached in that amount of time.
