    Pros

Goes to great efforts to ensure compliance and create a welcoming, collaborative, and friendly work environment. In general, Campbell employees are a pleasure to work with. During my time there, I had the privilege of working with several extremely talented, creative people.

    Cons

Like most startups, HotChalk faces the challenge of balancing creativity and sporadic bursts of high-yield success vs. the practical day-to-day aspects of of running a company. The atmosphere is frequently marked by volatility and uncertainty, often associated with the high turnover rate.

    Advice to Management

The most valuable leaders are not always the ones who yield the highest results in a monetary sense. Identify leaders who are creative, talented, responsible, and ethical, and and retain them in positions where they will have the most impact in the long-term.

I have been working at HotChalk full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

    Ability to work remotely
    The team (your colleagues)
Work-life balance - Never will take work home

    Cons

Transparency and Communication - HUGE lack of transparency from upper management. Sometimes, our managers are the last ones to know about things.
Collaboration - Difficulty collaborating across departments and partners
Performance Evaluations - Have not seen any employees receive performance evaluations in the 8-10 months I have been employed here.
Turnover and change - lots of turnover in the last few months (double digit) and lots of change.
No career path - No upward mobility, even though during interviews, management tells you there are tons of opportunities. Some employees on my team have been with the company more than three years and have not advanced at all.
Vacation policy - PTO (all the time off you want), BUT you cover others' work and they cover your work while you're out.
Non-student centered practices - a company that works with HE institutions that says its student centered practices are NOT student centered. For example, do not delay processes in an effort to retain students.

    Cons

As with any startup, priorities and even job descriptions can shift or pivot.

    Pros

Nice co-workers. Good location in Campbell, easy to get to from San Jose or other parts of Silicon Valley. Hours are normal 9 to 5.

    Cons

Absentee management. After a few years of growth the trend line is down and layoffs are constant.

    Advice to Management

Layoffs every single year should be replaced with smarter hiring. Stop the revolving door.

"A fake "start-up" with no real direction"

I worked at HotChalk full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The only pro I can think of is there are few nice and interesting coworkers you can work with but lately they started to get rid of them too.

    Cons

Tons... No real direction of where the company is going, they are still completely not profitable and they have been in the business for over 10 years!!! There have been no CFO for the past 1,5 year and it seems that if the CEO doesn't like a proffessional opinion of a good financial planner he gets rid of them. The turnover in the company is over 60%! Unbelievable! The HR group of people seem like a group of mean "clique" girls that are still stuck in high school, very unproffessional and hard to approach, they do not look out for the employees but only for their own raises that they establish on their own. People are being let go with shady fake excuses or they pretend that they left on their own when in the reality they are being let go because they didn't get along with their manager. The turnover is so high that once you establish the work flow, few month after the person is gone and you do not have any direction of what to do and then the next manager is gone few month after and it keeps going on and on... Benefits are pretty expensive and company doesn't cover much of it.Besides, they actually outsourse them so if you have any question HR will tell you to call the number! What are they are for there anyways then, they are overstuffed as is. There is no matching 401K. Absolutely no stability and no transparency what is going to happen the next day. Don't even think on leaving your stable company for a little raise, because you might end up on the street without a job in few months.

    Advice to Management

Get a grip and treat people well! Get a good financial adviser otherwise the money you raised will fly away quite soon.

"High turnover rate in Student Services and management rarely in office"

    I worked at HotChalk full-time

    Pros

Coworkers are great and often band together during hard times. Because management is on a rotating vacation schedule (the company has an unlimited vacation policy) your team members end up being your confidants and problem solvers.

    Cons

Management rarely in house. Promotions based on tenure in department, not merit. Vacation policy is abused by management which explains the high turnover rate in Student Services. It's a place where employees are extremely overworked and under paid. Management leads by fear and selfish gains. Management is not there to develop employees but rather work from their personal agenda to accomplish their tasks and goals. If you haven't noticed, student services is always hiring. Oddly telling about the position and department.

    Advice to Management

The entire Student Services department needs a reorg. Get management out of their positions and do not promote within - need individuals that have a fresh perspective and that are experienced. Goal = get new leaders that are accountable, approachable, and selfless.

I worked at HotChalk full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Mostly likable and friendly co-workers. The Pruneyard is a great location.

Premise of the current incarnation of the company makes sense (even if it is poorly executed)

    Cons

-Funny how 65% of their positive reviews came on a single day. Hint: HR ordered all hiring managers to post positive reviews. Remove those and company drops to 2.5 starts and CEO approval rating down to 30%.

-Unbelievably high employee turnover. It's a revolving door for both employees and management. On the plus side, if you don't like someone odds are they (or you) will be gone within a year.

-Always running out of money. Constantly wasting money on new strategy-of-the-month (aka hair-brained schemes) and CEO toys, while there are no funds for actual mission critical items.

-Lack of real communication to employees. Too much misinformation spread to employees from management.

-Call themselves a tech company, but do virtually no tech. It's a telemarketing & service company, not tech.

-Low compensation and career growth potential, especially for Silicon Valley.

    Advice to Management

YOU ARE NOT A START-UP by any definition of the term!! Calling yourself a start-up does not make it true. So stop saying it and using it as an excuse to explain any shortcoming or employee complaint.

The founder of virtually every company is replaced by a real CEO when the company reaches a certain point. HotChalk is long past that point.

    Pros

Easy job when it came to actually supporting customers.
You get to learn a variety of software / systems.

    Cons

Can a bit disorganized at times.
For an online educational company almost no telecommute opportunities.
Too much busy work at times.

    Advice to Management

Never put an employee in a no win situation having to choose schedule changes or not working at all.

    Pros

    None I can think of.

    Cons

People end up getting into senior roles not because of their capability but because they know someone on the top. Lots of churn in senior management - a revolving door that continues to spin.

    Advice to Management

Get your act together. Implement true meritocracy.
