I have been working at Hotwire full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Hotwire is in a time of major change and what happens in the next 6 months to a year will be critical for the survival of the company. After major layoffs last year, many people chose to leave so we had a pretty bare bones staff for a while, but things seem to be turning around. Neha is pushing for all the right things and it seems like people are hopeful and focused on improvement.

Overall the environment is open, relaxed, and supportive. We're alot smaller than Expedia, so everyone has a much bigger role and greater responsibility for making a difference in the company which is motivating and keeps every day interesting. Collaboration and knowledge sharing is common, and in my experience I haven't seen much conflict or tension between co-workers. Very good work life balance and great travel benefits, though working from home is discouraged unless necessary on certain occasions. Also, very cool new office in a great location.

    Cons

Many things wrong and broken with our product, and everyone all seems to shift responsibility to someone else for getting it fixed. Product moves very slowly and it takes 6 months to a year (or longer) to get any request completed. Customer experience is horrible in some cases, and reviews online are terrible, though I still believe enough people have a wonderful experience with our site to make it worth fighting for. There's also been a lack of culture and excitement at the company due to the big turnover the last few years and though everyone gets along very well, it just doesn't feel like a community. It will be interesting to see if this can turn around.

    Advice to Management

Put more pressure on yourselves and your team to achieve excellence and stop making excuses for a mediocre product. Promote people, increase salaries, do what it takes to keep people from leaving because every time we lose someone to another company, it slows the progress and sets us back. Allow people to work from home more often (with limitations) like most tech companies and encourage more team lunches, events, etc. to build culture.

I have been working at Hotwire full-time

    Pros

Being a part of Expedia brand so inherit a lot of benefits from Expedia
    Hotwire level travel benefits.
    Newer technologies

    Cons

    Lack of transparency
Lack of exposure to show talent, few people keep getting to do bigger things
    Lot of passive aggression

    Advice to Management

Make connection to all geo-location. We keep hearing the top level positions have to be in HQ [San Francisco] why is that so necessary given so many remote communication technologies exist.

    Be more transparent and truthful.

    Avoid favoritism.

Ok we get to ask questions but many times we get bookish B.S. answer from upper managements.

Lead with examples and action. Be our leaders and not bosses.

    I worked at Hotwire full-time

    Pros

Hotwire is a subsidiary of Expedia and Expedia is a leader in the industry with great benefits. The travel industry can be fun and exciting. The employees are very nice and intelligent people to work with.

    Cons

Legacy systems are a drag on the company. Management direction seems overly reactionary and changes occur at a significantly higher rate than execution and delivery.

    Advice to Management

Hotwire needs to execute at all levels and value knowledge and experience.
