      A company falling apart

      Pros

The consultants on the ground are the best people in the world. They love what they do, and support teachers with a passion.

      Cons

The upper management has no idea what's going on on the ground and day-to-day. They seem to think that working from home means less work. Lay offs have been constant for the last year. Cuts are made company-wide with carelessness and no thought to the unique territories and how a unilateral decision hurts them.

Thank you for your review and years of service at HMH. The world at large has been greatly impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic and HMH is no exception. This pandemic has accelerated HMH's transformation to be a Digital Technology Company. This acceleration was critical to best meet the needs of students and educators impacted in a way that was unimaginable. With this transformation, the organization had to make difficult decisions to reduce our workforce. These decisions were made with the upmost care. We are confident that the decisions made, will allow for better alignment to our connected strategy, and create an efficient organization for years to come. We appreciate your dedication and passion to support our teachers.

      Pros

The people are what makes HMH tolerable!

      Cons

Managers who love their titles, but have very little experience managing. Never-ending conference calls where you spend your time listening to nothing that involves work! The layoff monster is always creeping through the hallways looking for the next victim! Upper management is so clueless that it hurts!

      Was Great Until It Wasn't

      Pros

Wonderful intelligent, committed, and friendly people and good atmosphere. Good benefits. Decent work/life balance for non-managers . The work is important and HMH has very high standards and great products.

      Cons

Changing upper management and processes every few yearsears creates incredible wastes of time and money. The brain drain is huge from layoffs of loyal, experienced employees.

      Pros

Relaxed environment. Mostly great people. Dog friendly.

      Cons

Terrible management including upper management. Temps are treated like garbage. Men are favored. Loyalty does not pay off. No communication or team building. Favoritism is common.

      Pros

They try hard to be good. There are some great people here that try to make the company good.

      Cons

To many Silos, Upper management more concerned with cost than people. If the department is not revenue generating then why is it there. Too many good people gone and not enough people to take care of their customers

      Poor Middle Management

      Pros

Co-workers are great and most work very hard. Pay is good. Vacation policy is good.

      Cons

Very poor managers and directors. There is no training and managers are really awful. Some micro manage while others offer very little involvement so new hires are literally thrown to the wolves. It has created a very negative atmosphere. It really is unbelievable how poor the directors and managers are. The upper level management has no clue. There is no 360 review here, so bad managers stay and get promoted because they get credit for our hard work. They have this big 2020 initiative, but upper management remains clueless. We have lost most of our group over the past year because of no career path and frustration from the lack of management, training and flexibility. We are held to a different standard than the managers because there is no accountability for them. If someone has a grievance, they are frowned upon as trouble makers. The atmosphere is one of frustration and sometimes anger. High turnover and job anxiety is the result. In all my years of working in corporate America, I have never seen such a lack of management accountability and incompetence.

Years of poor management, now improving

Jul 9, 2019 - Lead Learning Architect in Evanston, IL

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Great colleagues: smart, professional, really nice people Excellent benefits Decent salary

      Cons

Years of poor stewardship by revolving door of upper management, including bad financial planning and a complete refusal to acknowledge lessons learned. Decision paralysis. Upper management was truly terrible for a number of years but from what I am now hearing, they are really turning the ship around. People seem much happier than they were a year ago.

      Incompetent Managers

      Jul 22, 2019 - Anonymous Employee

      Business Outlook

      Pros

Co-workers work very hard and take pride in their work. Collaboration takes place daily between co-workers.

      Cons

      - When the industry has gravitated to a more work from home environment, HMH is very stingy about letting people work from home. They treat workers like small children that they are babysitting vs letting our work speak for itself. - Incompetent middle management take credit for success of their team even when they do very little to assist/train/or mentor the people they are managing, - No 360 degree review so poor managers get to continue with very little to no improvement - upper management truly doesn't care about us and only does the status quo - Negative work environment (lots of peer discussion) due to the fact that managers are clueless yet keep getting promoted because the worker bees work their tails off with little help from their managers
