I worked at Howard County Government full-time (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Your experience will vary based on the personality of your management. Most times, they are ok. Time off can be generous, and pay can be competitive to private sector. Job security can be high, but sometimes dismissal are done like in private sector. If you make the right friend, you can move up very fast. Overall, good employer.

    Cons

You have to learn to manage up some of the mangers. Sometimes, they can be unreasonable and rude. Promotions are done in social networks. Unlikely you will learn much nor build your professional skill. Get some life experience from this employer, and move on.

    Advice to Management

Be objective instead of being subjective. When it comes to relative topics, recognize them as such, and discuss instead of forcing your opinions on your employee who does the work you haven't the slightest idea about. Being so subjective and opinionated makes it difficult for your employee to do the work you are expecting your employee to do! After all, your employee is evaluated by you and you're hindering your employee from doing the best with your speculations that do not help because you have no idea what the job is about.

I worked at Howard County Government full-time

    Pros

Howard County Maryland is comprised of a population that is highly educated, savvy, and knowledgeable. As a result, their expectations of the county government are high, and fortunately they have elected officials that are very aware of this reality. Overall, great employer.

    Cons

As with all government organizations, there is bureaucratic "red tape" that must be handled accordingly. I experienced a minimal amount of political game playing, but eventually it became enough to justify moving on in my career.

    Advice to Management

Try to seriously consider the young professionals in your organizations. They are your successors, and as such you should train them for greatness. Encourage their ambition by offering them opportunities, and in turn they will make you look great.

I have been working at Howard County Government full-time

    Pros

Great work-life balance. Great benefits. Stable employment. The current administration (2015) really tries to connect to its employees and to the community.

    Cons

There is little room for advancement as most of the employees tend to stay until retirement. This also leads to some practices and processes being outdated. Management varies across the board. Some managers are great and communicate well. Managers should receive training prior to moving into a management position and/or receive training every couple of years.

    Advice to Management

Some of those in management positions need to remember that each group should be working together and not against each other.
