I worked at Howard County Public Schools part-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Full benefits for part time, outstanding new principal in 2015. Team environment within math department. Worked with various age teachers and learned from all of them.

    Cons

Reviews for my position were not regular or consistent. It did get better with new leadership. Hours changed each year, so I needed to be flexible.

I have been working at Howard County Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

Great staff, administration, facilities, and students!

    Cons

The BOE and superintendent has been subpar for years and is steadily bringing the system down. Additionally the pay bumps have been minor

    Advice to Management

    Put your students first

I have been working at Howard County Public Schools full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

Good people. Desirable district in which to work. Lots of wealth in certain areas and lower income in others--very diverse and many different environments/parental involvement levels.

    Cons

Budget cuts. Paperwork. Data discussions. Meetings, meetings, meetings. Common core--not a lot of freedom to teach freely. Gotta hit those standards for PARCC.

    Advice to Management

Give more money to special ed--hire more paras and TEs.

I have been working at Howard County Public Schools full-time (More than 5 years)

    Pros

This place is nice to work for. I love the employee environment and helping children. Great place to work each day.

    Cons

Really nothing to complain about. Each school is a different experience. Administration is moved around a lot which is good and bad.

    Pros

Great people to work with and quality students which pretty much gets ruined by the cons. There will be mixed reviews depending on what the job position is.

    Cons

No equity amongst disciplines. You have teachers leaving at 2:30 while othrer work late due to the number of preps they have. 3 preps in a foreign language is nothing like 3 preps in mathematics or science. They receive the same pay based on step.Bottom line is waaayyyy too many expectations. It's stressful and no consideration for life outside the job due to unrealistic expectations.

    Advice to Management

Start looking at the teachers you are killing....particularly new teachers who can't handle the workload. 43% of new teachers leave after a year?!!!
