I have been working at Howard County Public Schools (More than 10 years)

    Pros

Relatively high pay for teachers in Maryland. A variety of classes to teach and a lot of autonomy. Many great education-focused parents and children. Summer vacation, Winter and Spring break!

    Cons

September through June can really be draining. The demands on a teacher can truly be exhausting. Most teachers end up working 70+ hour weekends when evening grading, sponsoring clubs, and coaching sports are added to their schedules. Even in Howard County, some students can be very challenging due to their anti-social behaviors.

    Advice to Management

Continue to give your well trained teachers a lot of autonomy to their best.

I worked at Howard County Public Schools full-time

    Pros

Great hours with plenty of time off.

    Cons

Unless you're a teacher, the Board of Education won't care about you since it's the teachers that get them elected. The BoE puts teachers and the union above everyone, including students.
