    Pros

Investigators' labs are well funded. Excellent benefits for lab members.

    Cons

Due to distributed structure, any cons would depend on individual PI's personalities and policies. No problems obverall.

I have been working at Howard Hughes Medical Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

HHMI provides great benefits. The local science office in Boston is extremely helpful and proactive.

    Cons

Salary is based more on age than ability, and sometimes fails to match salaries host institution offers. Upper management has gone through changes and has started to limit/remove benefits that were once available.

I have been working at Howard Hughes Medical Institute full-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

the benefits (while increasing in price) are still the best I've ever seen. they support the scientists, rather than the science, specifically.

    Cons

some upheaval in management lately is a bit unnerving, but largely only impacts those with direct connections to administration

not a lot of obvious room for advancement, or opportunities for prof development

I have been working at Howard Hughes Medical Institute full-time (More than a year)

    Pros

The benefits are markedly better than most other post-docs. Although some things have been cut back, like the 5% retirement contribution, it is still an upgrade from most University appointed positions. Better and cheaper health care, benefits credits, little perks here and there. It ends up adding an effective $5k to your salary, which as a post-doc is significant.

    Cons

They could still do better. They could have an official and enforceable holiday/vacation/sick policy for post-docs and otherwise treat a post-doc as an actual job and not "training".

    Advice to Management

    Stop cutting things back!

I worked at Howard Hughes Medical Institute full-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Great benefits, particularly health & dental. One of the best health insurances in the USA, if not the best.
Organization-wise, they are very good, particularly HR-department.
    Generous with covering reimbursement costs.

    Cons

Sometimes too much work is required in order to be successful.

    Pros

Outstanding science, you get to work with extremely smart people. Benefits for postdocs are excellent.

    Cons

Funding for Research fellows is restricted to 5 yrs. Work-life balance depends on who your Principal Investigator is.

    Pros

Excellent benefits - the health insurance is amazing. Also, the contribution to 401K is a nice bonus, which I believe is not common for postdoctoral positions.

    Cons

I really don't have anything negative to say about this company. They provide my lab with excellent funding, which allows me to perform experiments without a huge worry about the cost.

    Pros

HHMI PIs are the most accomplished PIs in biology and has plenty of money to spend on research. HHMI also provides great benefit for postdocs.

    Cons

Frankly I don't see any downside working for HHMI. Maybe some of the PIs have too much ego and are difficult to deal with?

    Advice to Management

Great institute! Keep doing your great job and I look forward to seeing greater achievement and greater growth and name recognition.
