A Happy Former Hulugan

Great environment and emphasis on community and culture.
Cons
Not really a con per se, but the hours were long and there was not a lot of downtime. That said, I appreciated the workflow and productivity of everyone's collaborative efforts.

Great team and great feeling of accomplishment

- I really enjoy my team. We can easily joke around and keep the mood light. - People are very smart and capable. - On my team we are given tasks and not hand held. This is a pro to me because at my last place I felt like I was constantly shown how to code or do something. There's a lot more fun in being presented with the problem and having to track down the right people, learn the right APIs, and think about the most efficient way to solve a problem. I enjoy that aspect mostly because it gives me a sense of trust from everyone else that I am capable to do my job. - Great pay
Cons
- Like I said above, I enjoy my team, but this varies from team to team. I'm lucky but I know other teams are not as social. Other teams may have worse managers etc. Just know that if you want to interview you can always move inside the company to a different team after a year or so. - Long hours sometimes - Did not experience this with my team but there have been many long and hard projects that were tossed last minute after being code completed.

Cons

Great perks, just wasn't given enough growth opportunities
Jun 10, 2018 - Anonymous EmployeeRecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Great benefits. Great office space. Unlimited time off. Free beer and wine. Relaxation room. Good bonus if you stick around for confusing ltip to start stacking. Mostly good work/life balance. Good location in Santa Monica, 10 minutes away from 3rd street.
Cons
Not given enough growth opportunities or promotions even when I pushed for it although I received good annual reviews. For the higher positions that opened up, they would always hire from the outside rather than promoting people from within, at least in my department. The pay gap was huge too between people who had been loyal and stuck with the company vs new people who got hired, as the new hire got sometimes around 10k more. I saw a lot of good, talented employees not being noticed at all and only the people who were loudly marketing themselves got promoted. A lot of people wanted to leave the team I was on including the management, and some did leave for other teams within the company. Long hours at times. A lot of people didn't see a future in the team and were pretty discouraged. A lot of people on my team had problems getting promoted (and had to compete with new hires like it was a new position vs it just being a natural transition in their career track) and soon as they left, they went up to some crazy director level position at another equally big company.

Play Hard, Work Harder
Oct 3, 2017 - Anonymous Employee in Santa Monica, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
- Flexible work policy (work from home, PTO) - Intelligent workforce (seriously bright minds at work over here) - Opportunities to grow in career and a huge emphasis on owning your career - Approachable management: Really easy to communicate to "higher ups" and opinions matter - Amazing benefits: Great "typical" benefits like Medical and Dental, but crazy supplemental benefits that focus on wellness. We'll have everything from yoga to guided meditation classes to massages. - Transparency: Very clear and easy to understand company roadmap. Appreciate that this knowledge is shared with all employees during regular monthly meetings.
Cons
- Heavy workload: Everyone seems to want Hulu to succeed, but long hours can be frequent in meeting this success. It can feel like you're burning at both ends the majority of the year.

Culture is in a nosedive, company is in “maintenance mode”
Jan 23, 2019 - Anonymous Employee in Santa Monica, CARecommendCEO ApprovalBusiness OutlookPros
Pays close to market as far as tech companies in LA are concerned Lots of talented and smart people hired to ship great products Reasonably solid product, access to a lot of content, content producers and consumer data
Cons
Product is an also-ran in the marketplace Very little to follow Handmaid’s Tale in terms of hitworthy shows Hemhorraging talent hired under the old CEO due to newer “media company style” management under new leadership. Lack of focus on operations and collaboration have led to siloed teams and adversarial relationships. Generally very difficult to orchestrate big initiatives across the company. Series of bad new hires have changed the vibe from what once felt like a tech company to more like the casting call for an Ariana Grande video. Needless to say, not the smartest bunch. Disney acquisition and “what’s next” have put the product roadmap on hold effectively. Everyone is afraid of eventual downsizing and reconciliation but nobody is speaking about it. Expectations are set that you will work long hours on-site.
