I have been working at Humboldt State University full-time

    Pros

Decent benefits. Somewhat flexible work schedule. There are some very competent people.

    Cons

No merit based raises. Actually, no raises at all. Very low pay compared to market value. There is little trust between management and staff. Parking is a pain. There are some incompetent people in important positions.

    Advice to Management

Know who your competent people are and help them out. They probably know more than the consultant you just wasted a bunch of money on.

I worked at Humboldt State University part-time

    Pros

Worked with wonderful people. Meeting and instructing the diverse student population was the greatest part of the job. HSU offers excellent dental, health, and vision insurance, even to part-timers. Easy community to work with.

    Cons

Instruction can be a difficult, no matter where you teach - lots of at-home work; expectations to return e-mails and phone messages promptly. Humboldt County is a beautiful part of the world, but has limited shopping and medical care. Serious health issues require a 4-6 hour drive to Santa Rosa or San Francisco.

I worked at Humboldt State University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

The department I worked in was extremely flexible when it came to putting school before work. It made it so much less stressful to not have that worry.

    Cons

Not all departments appeared to be flexible on missing shifts because of school work, so check with the department head before accepting a position that requires too much of our time.

    Advice to Management

Make sure that all student assistant positions have a school first policy, otherwise it was a fantastic experience and the campus leadership was great to work with.

I worked at Humboldt State University part-time (Less than a year)

    Pros

Many bright individuals who are very willing to teach, help, and work with you in your growth at your specific position. Welcoming base, who enjoy coming to work each day and enjoy all that has to do with Humboldt State University

    Cons

Communication between department and staff could have been more structured

    Advice to Management

Any opportunities for networking outside of our university system would be a great help to those hoping for a future working in specific university wide departments

I have been working at Humboldt State University part-time (More than 3 years)

    Pros

My department is very understanding about being a student comes first. The full-time staff are great to work with and it is great that many of them are Alumni, they love the school as much as the students do.

    Cons

Housing in Arcata is way overpriced, the homeless/transient/tweaker issues that the county is experiencing, and higher than California average gas prices begin to wear on the wallet. A trip to the river or beach makes all that go away, thankfully!
