I have been working at Huntington Ingalls Industries full-time for more than 3 years

    Pros

    - Great pay -A lot of overtime -Good benefits

    Cons

    - Mangers who do know how to do their jobs - working with majority raciest white people - The overtime pay is less then what you get an hour - People do not like changes -Competition amongst different teams in same department -They make you stupid over time

    Advice to Management

Find mangers who know what they are doing. In my department my manger does not know anything about software development, but yet is in chaser of development. Find people who know what they are doing, do not hire an Mechanical engineer for a software engineer position. There are many of computer science majors who can do that job right.

    Approves of CEO

I worked at Huntington Ingalls Industries for less than a year

    Pros

The opportunity to influence change in the ship building process and the ability to be involved in process improvement initiatives.

    Cons

Have to deal with being pulled in multiple directions at one time making it a challenge to focus on one particular issue

    Advice to Management

Continue to allow interns to go through rotations within the quality department.

    Pros

Flexible schedules, stability (steady paycheck), good benefits

    Cons

-Management -Real engineering work opportunities are hard to find here. I estimate > 80% of engineering will never actually do any engineering work here. -Your opinion or what you want to do has no relevance.

I have been working at Huntington Ingalls Industries for more than 5 years

    Pros

Everyone is a pleasure to work with. Great communication between engineering and union workers. Managers are understanding. Flexible work schedule. Submarine and aircraft carriers need to be built so solid work.

    Cons

Over the past year there has been a decrease in benefits. The company offers no continuing education program. They have been offering a cohort program for nuclear engineering (graduate degree). Great for the shipyard. Good luck taking that somewhere else. The cohort programs takes 4 years and if for any reason you need to stop you have to wait for the next one to start. Oh an stock price is at a record high but we...

    Advice to Management

Raises, parking, continuing education. You have the money stop making the golden parachutes for execs.

I have been working at Huntington Ingalls Industries for more than 8 years

    Pros

Management is committed to employee growth. Comparable benefits package and salary bands. Wide variety of fields and disciplines to work under.

    Cons

The sector and corporate policies are often needlessly convoluted. Union rules make mundane tasks cumbersome. Engagement surveys and self evaluation processes foster discontent.

    Advice to Management

There needs to be more upfront career path coaching for entering employees. Finding opportunities for coaching falls to the employee, and mentoring is usually not suggested until several years into employment.

I worked at Huntington Ingalls Industries for more than 10 years

    Pros

Good benefits, some fun experiences, paid training.

    Cons

Dangerous, sexist workers with little or no over site, dangerous parking in city areas with no lighting or security. Against the law to carry mace or anything to protect yourself with-against company policy. Downtown area crime ridden, lots of theft from cars, no response from security or law enforcement. Sexual harassment blown off as typical of shipyard workers. LOW pay for many jobs that take extreme training hard...

    Advice to Management

Give the management jobs to people with actual experience not just to fill quotas. Very inexperienced people move ahead for those obvious reasons and leave the rest of us to do their work.

I have been working at Huntington Ingalls Industries full-time for more than 5 years

    Pros

Great people. I really enjoy the people. Many have become great friends or even like family. Benefits are great, for the most part.

    Cons

Cons depend on what department or division you work in. Pay raises don't trickle down to low level employees. Upward mobility can be hard if you aren't in the good ole boys club.

    Advice to Management

Listen to the lower level employees more often.

I have been working at Huntington Ingalls Industries full-time for more than 10 years

    Pros

Stability of a job regardless of what that job turns into as the company's needs change. Surface attempts to make it better.

    Cons

Stagnation of compensation. Tepid leadership as a whole. Risk adverse versus adventurous. Strangling of the new thing whilst throwing resources at dying processes.

    Advice to Management

    Get flexible and competitive

I have been working at Huntington Ingalls Industries for more than 10 years

    Pros

low expectations, flexible schedules, you don't have to try very hard

    Cons

I worked at Huntington Ingalls Industries full-time for less than a year

    Pros

Very relaxed and calm environment. They let you work at your own pace. Just make sure you meet deadlines if there are any because people get laid off and do not mis-charge your time because that will get you fired.

    Cons

Work is micro-managed and there is not much innovation. The company likes to stick to tradition because the Navy doesn't like change.

    Advice to Management

    Nothing.
