Center Poorly Managed, Very High Turnover Rate

Nov 11, 2021 - ACT/SAT Tutor and Teacher in Naperville, IL
    Recommend

    Business Outlook

    Pros

Relatively flexible hours, curriculum is already developed and plenty of material to work through

    Cons

Curriculum has frequent errors and is often an inaccurate representation of tests, scheduling not centralized which causes at least monthly errors and teacher only gets paid for first 30 minutes of missed session, students are pressured to perform and not allowed room to grow/make mistakes, pay is low given how much students pay for the program, management just generally out of touch with teachers

    Pros

Flexible hours, payed half for students who don't show up, management was very understanding and accommodating when issues arose

    Cons

Hours are limited by demand of students, low pay compared to private tutoring, hours might be split up with hours long gaps in between students

Great for "trying out" teaching, or as a side gig for teachers

Aug 29, 2021 - Learning Center Tutor in Lodi, CA

    Business Outlook

    Pros

    - The day-to-day: Students will be scheduled for a session with you (usually 2 hours per student) and you will work through the material with them while scoring, tracking and making notes on their progress via laptop. - $14/hr for learning center tutoring, $17/hr for SAT/ACT prep and subject tutoring - All material/curriculum is given to you, and you just work through it (very minimal planning) - Only 1 on 1 tutoring is expected of you, but you may decide to take on more during learning center sessions (this may vary based on how busy your location is?) - Flexible hours for the most part. Typically by Friday you'll know what your schedule looks like for the next week. - You get to meet and interact with a wide range of students from all different backgrounds. Some kids are there to get ahead, some are there because they've fallen behind, others don't want to be there but their mom signed them up so here they are. - No teaching experience required for this job, I was hired simply for having a Bachelor's degree (mechanical engineering)

    Cons

-It's definitely a part time gig; the pay isn't high enough for this to be your only job (most hours I ever got was ~25 in one week, it was typically more like 15) - If you do test prep, you'll get a copy of the Huntington test prep books to keep/take home. It's on you to make sure that you know how to do everything in there and be able to teach it to someone, may have to do some light studying (this mostly applies if you're still new) - Some kids are easy to work with, others very much are not. Every once in a while there may be students who are stubborn or have behavioral issues/disabilities and can take a lot of effort to keep on track. Although, I would say that students like this are the exception.
